Dimeric cyclophosphazanes [{P(μ-NR)}2(μ-NR)]2 [R = tBu ( 1) and iPr ( 3)] were oxidized with elemental selenium. During these reactions an unexpected C–N bond cleavage and N–H bond formation occurred. Compound 1 produced P4(μ-NtBu)3(μ-NH)3Se4 ( 2) where three tBu groups were lost in the form of isobutylene. In contrast, during the oxidation of the less sterically hindered 3, the resulting product, P4(μ-NiPr)5(μ-NH)Se4 ( 4), showed only one substituent loss. Theoretical studies confirmed the steric nature of the driving force underlying the different outcomes.

In this research, a new generation of ternary nanocomposites based on poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET), phosphorylated chitosan and surface modified alumina nanoparticles were fabricated in four steps. The phosphorylation process was targeted for the insertion of phosphorus moieties as a flame retardant agent in the final PET nanocomposite. Likewise, environmentally friendly nano-alumina was used for PET matrix to improve the thermal properties of PET in collaboration with organic anchored phosphorus moieties. Alternatively, the presence of bio-safe modified alumina nanoparticles in combination with phosphorylated chitosan simultaneously improved the antibacterial activity and thermal properties of the PET matrix. Furthermore, the effects of the phosphorylated chitosan and alumina nanoparticles on the morphology and thermal properties of nanocomposites were inspected by different approaches. The structure and distribution of the nanoscale particles in PET were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy. In addition, differential scanning calorimetry and thermogravimetric analyses were used for the in-depth evaluation of the thermal properties of prepared nanocomposites. Prepared nanocomposites showed better growth inhibition activities against Escherichia coli bacteria compared to the PET and PET/phosphorylated chitosan samples. Also, the thermal characteristics of prepared nanocomposites were considerably improved.

This study deals with the preparation of activated carbon (AC) from poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) waste and the physicochemical characterisation of AC and its use as an adsorbent for bisphenol A (BPA) in aqueous solution. AC was prepared by chemical activation with KOH and by physical activation in steam. The activation with KOH was carried out by first impregnation of PET by wet and dry routes at the PET/KOH weight ratios of 1:1, 1:3 and 1:5 and by carbonisation of the resulting products at 850°C for 2 h in N2 atmosphere. Activation was performed by heating at 900°C for 1 h. The ACs were characterised by N2 adsorption at 196°C, mercury porosity, mercury density measurements, FT-IR spectroscopy and measurement of the pH of the zero charge point (pHpzc). The activation yield is 58.4-49.4% with KOH in aqueous solution, 75.823.9% with solid KOH and 5.9% with steam. Using solid KOH, greater developments of a more heterogeneous porosity were achieved with increasing impregnation PET/KOH ratio area. For SK1:5, SBETis1990m 2g-1 and the pore volumes are 0.71cm3g-1, micropores; 0.81cm 3g-1, mesopores; and 1.77 cm3g-1, macropores. The BPA adsorption data fit better to the Ho and Mckay second order kinetic model than to the Lagergren first order kinetic model and to the Langmuir equation than to the Freundlich equation. From the kinetic and thermodynamic points of view, the adsorption process of BPA is more favourable for SK1:5.

The first enantioselective sulfa-Michael addition of alkyl thiols to alkenyl benzimidazoles, enabled by a bifunctional iminophosphorane (BIMP) organocatalyst, is described. The iminophosphorane moiety of the catalyst provides the required basicity to deprotonate the thiol nucleophile while the chiral scaffold and H-bond donor control facial selectivity. The reaction is broad in scope with respect to the thiol and benzimidazole reaction partners with the reaction proceeding in up to 98% yield and 96 : 4 er.

Using kenaf as starting material, a study about the preparation and characterization of activated carbon fibers (ACFs) from long fibers was carried out. The carbonization products of kenaf fibers and ACFs
were texturally characterized by N2 adsorption at -196 ºC, mercury porosimetry, and scanning electron microscopy. The activation of the raw material of Kenaf by its carbonization at 400 ºC for 0.5 h in a N2 atmosphere increase the porosity of the samples, particularly the activation at 700 ºC with carbon dioxide. It should be noted the porous development shown by the scanning electron micrographs of samples FBC4A72 and FBC4A74. It is observed that the variation of treatment time from 2 to 4 hours leads to an important
development of the porous structure in samples FBC4A74, which is probably a consequence of an interconnection between pores. These results open a wide field of applications of these fibers.

The importance of the textural and physicochemical characteristics upon the adsorption capacity of the commercial activated carbons (ACs) Coconut, Wood, Merck, Darco, and Norit towards ronidazole (RNZ) and diclofenac (DCF) from water solution was investigated thoroughly in this work. At pH = 7, Coconut AC and Wood AC presented the highest adsorption capacity towards RNZ (444 mg/g) and DCF (405 mg/g). The maximum mass of RNZ adsorbed onto Coconut AC was higher in this study than those outlined previously in other works. Besides, the maximum capacity of Wood AC for adsorbing DCF was comparable to those found for other ACs. The adsorption capacity of all the ACs was increased by surface area and was favored by incrementing the acidic site concentration. The π-π stacking interactions were the predominant adsorption mechanism for the RNZ and DCF adsorption on ACs, and the acidic sites favored the adsorption capacity by activating the π-π stacking. Electrostatic interactions did not influence the adsorption of RNZ on Coconut AC, but electrostatic repulsion decreased that of DCF on Wood AC. The adsorption of DCF on Wood AC was reversible but not that of RNZ on Coconut AC. Besides, the adsorption of RNZ and DCF on the Coconut and Wood ACs was endothermic in the range of 15–25 °C.

The fabrication of activated carbon (AC) is widely carried out by the so-called chemical activation method, in which the biomass substratum is put in touch with an impregnating chemical agent prior to the carbonization stage. Even though this methodology is known for a long time, there are many features that are still poorly understood, particularly those regarding the details of the underlying mechanisms involved during the interaction of the activating agent with the precursor, eventually leading to the development of AC. Previous research conducted in the laboratories dealt with the use of cherry stones (CS) and phosphoric acid, toward ACs with tailored porous structures, finding out that the experimental variables of the impregnation stage were crucial for their eventual characteristics. Thus, the results obtained at that time deserved further discussion, with the aim at unraveling the true nature of those findings. With such purpose, the authors comment further on the CS and H3PO4 in non-conventional impregnation methodologies, performed in the previous works. Four series of H3PO4-impregnated products were prepared in a previous research, using a wide range of impregnation strategies, aiming at controlling the loading of H3PO4 on the lignocellulosic substratum. Herein, with the mass uptake as the main, it was possible to link the uptake with the chemical changes of H3PO4 in agreement with essential chemistry knowledge. Mass gain is strongly dependent on the impregnation method, and interesting insights arise on the basis of the mass changes of CS after impregnation.

The development of new chemical synthetic methodologies that transform industrial chemical processes into more sustainable ones, constitutes one of the challenges and objectives of chemical research both in academia and in industry. The use of activated carbons as heterogeneous catalysts represents one of the most beneficial options for process efficiency in terms of reaction rate, yield, and ease of work-up. We have produced six new activated carbons by treatment of three affordable commercial carbons with either nitric acid, or with sulfuric acid. The complete characterization of these nine activated carbons has been carried out through the measurement of nitrogen adsorption capacity, porosimetry, elemental organic analysis, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy and determination of the point of zero charge; transmission electron microscopy was also performed on two of them. The catalytic activity of these nine catalysts has been tested in the acetylation reaction of hydroxyl groups, undoubtedly one of the most versatile and widely used chemical transformations both at the laboratory and industrial scale. The results show that by means of a simple and affordable modification of commercial xerogel with sulfuric acid, a more efficient catalyst is formed. Acetylation with the best catalyst is completed in 90 min at room temperature and the product is easily isolated in quantitative yield. The system can be reutilized for five runs with only a small loss of catalytic activity.

The development of carbonaceous adsorbents (CAs) from scrap tyre rubber (TR), poly(ethylene terephthalate) plastic bottles (PET) and an industrial PP (plastic)-EPDM (rubber) blend (VR) for use in the treatment of water discolouration is investigated. Not only the three starting materials separately, but also two- and three-component blends in the mass ratios of 50/50 and 75/12.5/12.5 were used for all of them. The CAs were first prepared by heat treatment of the materials at 900°C for 2 h in N2 and at 850°C for 2 h in steam, then characterised by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), adsorption of N2 at -196°C, mercury porosimetry, FT-IR spectroscopy and measurement of the pH of the zero charge point (pHpzc), and finally tested as adsorbents for methylene blue (MB) in aqueous solution. The yield of the preparation process of CAs is significantly higher with TR and quite similar to PET and VR. It significantly increases or decreases with material mixtures, presumably due to the interaction of VR with TR and PET during such a process. The use of such blends results in greater increases in surface area and porosity. The SBET is 675 m2-g-1 for the sample prepared from the 50/50 mixture of PET and VR (M3), while it is 248 and 100 m2-g-1 for the products of the separate activation of PET and VR in steam. pHpzc is between 5.8 and 11.1. The favourable effect also concerns the adsorption process of MB. The pseudo-second order kinetic constant is 2.69-103 g-mol-h-1 and the Langmuir adsorption capacity is 0.85-103 g-mol-h-1 for M3.

Because of the relevance in heterogeneous catalysis, the changes produced in the surface chemistry of activated carbon (AC) upon impregnation with the Al3+, Fe3+ and Zn2+ ions from aqueous solution of NO3 salts at pH 2.91 for Al3+, 1.54 for Fe3+ and 5.16 for Zn2+ in two successive soaking and oven-drying steps are studied. The samples (A120, F120 and Z120) were analyzed in terms of elemental composition and by energy dispersive X-ray analysis (EDX), FT-IR spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and measurement of pH of the point of zero charge (pHpzc). The process yield was 102 wt % for A120, 114 wt % for F120, and 103 wt % for Z120. Chromene, pyrone and ether type structures are by far predominant in AC. The hydrolysis of metal ions markedly influences the pH of the impregnation solution and thereby the oxidation of surface functional groups of AC by O2 and NO3 dissolved in such a solution. The degree of AC oxidation is larger with the Fe3+ solution than with the Al3+ and Zn2+ solutions. Carboxylic acid groups for F120 and phenolic hydroxyl groups for Z120 and especially for A120 are formed from reducing structures of AC. The nitrogen content is higher by Z120 > A120 >F120 > AC. pHpzc is 10.50 for AC, 5.20 for A120, 4.00 for F120 and 6.30 for Z120.

As part of our ongoing studies related with the coordination chemistry of 2-thiazoline derivatives with transition ions, we report the synthesis of a new class of structurally novel complexes containing in their structures a 2-aminobenzimidazole ring. The resulting compound, 2-(2-aminobenzimidazole-1-yl)-2-thiazoline (BzTn), and two cobalt(II) complexes have been structurally characterized by means of physical measurements. The crystal structures of BzTn, [CoCl2(BzTn)2] (1) and [CoBr2(BzTn)2] (2) have been determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction. In both Co(II) complexes, BzTn acts as a monodentate ligand through nitrogen atom of benzimidazole ring. The distorted tetrahedral environmental around the Co(II) ions is completed with two halide ions. Besides that, the newly synthesized compounds were screened for their antimicrobial activity against 6 strains of bacteria: S. aureus, E. coli, S. epidermidis. B. subtilis, E. faecalis y P. aeruginosa.

The study was focused on the application of catalytic wet peroxide oxidation (CWPO) with a synthesized magnetic catalyst (Fe3O4/MWCNTs) for the treatment of real water matrices spiked with pharmaceutical compounds. CWPO was carried out by modifying the initial pH of surface water (SW), wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) effluent, brewery wastewater (BW) and hospital wastewater (HW), and the effect of the addition of the emerging pollutants naproxen (NAP) and diclofenac (DCF). From the experimental results, pH and concentration of NAP and DCF in CWPO were crucial factors in the successful pollutants removal from water matrices. The lab-prepared catalyst showed high removal rates of NAP and DCF from different water matrices spiked with the NAP-DCF mixture at pH 5.0. The highest average removal rate of TOC (75%), NAP (66%), DCF (76%), TN (39%) and aromaticity (68.39%) was obtained for SW matrix using 1.0 g L−1 of catalyst, pH ≈ 5.0, 5 mM of H2O2 and 60 °C. The mineralization decreased with the increase of the initial TOC concentration of the tested matrix. By CWPO tests of the real water matrices it was demonstrated that DCF removal was higher than NAP. From the recyclability tests, the catalyst demonstrated high activity and stability along three consecutive CWPO cycles of 8 h each one. The pseudo-second order model well-described the degradation of NAP and DCF. Finally, aromaticity and toxicity of the effluents were greatly reduced after CWPO treatment. This work demonstrated that CWPO with the magnetic catalyst is an efficient method to remove DCF-NAP mixtures from real aqueous matrices.

Recycling printed circuit boards (PCBs) is becoming a source of precious metals and an alternative to conventional mining. This phenomenon is now known as “urban mining.” In this work, a polyphenols-rich plant extract has been obtained from olive-tree leaves, and its ability to contribute to reducing four metals, namely, Ag, Cu, Cr, and Sn, that are present in scrap PCBs has been studied. Three reductants (NaBH4, Fe◦, and the olive-tree leaves extract) have been used to recover these valuable metals. An attempt has been made to minimize the concentration of the first two, replacing them with a natural, cheaper, and less toxic reductant. To achieve this goal, a computer-assisted factorial, composed, centered, orthogonal, and rotatable statistical design of experiments (FCCORD) has been used to build the experimental matrix to be carried out in the laboratory and, next, for the statistical treatment of the results. The results show that it is possible to achieve only a partial recovery of the four metals (silver, copper, chromium, and tin) from PCBs leachates by using sodium borohydride, iron, and the extract separately. In other words, none of these three reductants alone can completely remove any of the four metals in the leachate. Nevertheless, using the statistical design of experiments, the total recovery of the four metals has been achieved by combining the three reductants in the appropriate concentrations. Hence, polyphenols-rich plant extracts in general and olive-tree leaves extract in particular can be regarded as promising coadjuvants in the rising field of urban mining.

Because of the relevance in heterogeneous catalysis, the changes produced in the surface chemistry of activated carbon (AC) upon impregnation with the Al3+, Fe3+ and Zn2+ ions from aqueous solution of NO3¯ salts at pH 2.91 for Al3+, 1.54 for Fe3+ and 5.16 for Zn2+ in two successive soaking and oven-drying steps are studied. The process yield was 102 wt% for A120, 114 wt% for F120, and 103 wt% for Z120. Chromene, pyrone and ether type structures are by far predominant in AC. The hydrolysis of metal ions markedly influences the pH of the impregnation solution and thereby the oxidation of surface functional groups of AC by O2 and NO3¯ dissolved in such a solution.

Postharvest pruning generates large amounts of vine-shoots (VSs) that are used as a domestic fuel or burned in the field, resulting in the release of CO2 and NO2. Its use as a raw material for the preparation of activated carbons (ACs) turns VS into a high added-value product. In this work, ACs have been prepared from VS by physical and chemical activation. The discoloring and deodorant capacity of these ACs has been analyzed and correlated with their physicochemical characteristics. We have demonstrated the excellent features of ACs prepared from VS to be used as fining agents of wines. ACs have been employed to mitigate the negative effects of browning on a white wine commodity as well as to decrease the presence of unpleasant aromas (e.g., vinyl phenols), contributing to solve an actual problem in the winemaking industry. The suitability of ACs to be used in enology was tested on a white wine cv. Pardina. The physically activated samples exhibited a higher capacity to remove polyphenolic compounds and improved the chromatic characteristics. Principal Component Analysis (PCA) was applied to study the discoloring capacity of the samples and their ability to remove unpleasant aromas.

Mechanochemistry is well-established in the solid-phase synthesis of inorganic materials but has rarely been employed for molecular syntheses. In recent years, there has been nascent interest in ‘greener’ synthetic methods with less solvent, higher yields, and shorter reaction times being especially appealing to the fine chemicals and inorganic catalyst industries. Herein, we demonstrate that main-group indium(III) complexes featuring bis(imino)acenaphthene (BIAN) ligands are readily accessible through a mechanochemical milling approach. The synthetic methodology reported herein not only bypasses the use of large solvent quantities and transition metal reagents for ligand synthesis, but also reduces reaction times dramatically. These new main-group complexes exhibit the potential to be reduced to indium(I) compounds, which may be employed as photosensitizers in organic catalyses and functional materials.

This paper describes the interaction between aromatic esters and peracetylated cyclodextrins (CDs) studied by NMR spectroscopy in deuterochloroform (CDCl3). The observed chemical shift changes highlight the existence of interactions between an aromatic alkyl ester, water and peracetylated CDs. In some cases, substituent chemical shift determination was influenced by the low water content of CDCl3 and/or the host molecule. Higher CD concentrations resulted in water signal drifts in all studied cases. It was not possible to obtain a completely dry sample of peracetyl γCD: ∼1 mol of water remained and the water signal showed reversed movement, with respect to the other two CD analogues, upon increasing host concentration. The estimated 1 : 1 stability constants for the water : peracetyl CD complexes are in the 50–150 M−1 range in CDCl3, but show a relatively large calculation error. The calculated 1 : 1 stability constants for the peracetyl CD : ester complexes are also in this range, but 1 : 2 and 2 : 1 complex compositions are also possible. Overall, our results highlight dynamic aspects of water nanoconfined in a highly hydrophobic environment, thus mimicking biological recognition where a few water molecules often play a pivotal role.

The first synthesis of methyl 2-(4-hydroxy-2-oxo-2H-chromen-3-yl)-2-oxoacetate is described. This compound has been successfully used in a multicomponent enol-Ugi condensation with imines and isocyanides affording 4-aminoacyl-coumarin enamines in a highly atom-economic and convergent process. Furthermore, the postcondensation transformation of these adducts allows the straightforward synthesis of both unprotected amino amides and as yet unknown 2-hydroxychromenyl enamines.

Special Issue: Enabling Techniques for Organic Synthesis
Sonochemistry, the use of sound waves, usually within the ultrasonic range (>20 kHz), to boost or alter chemical properties and reactivity constitutes a long-standing and sustainable technique that has, however, received less attention than other activation protocols despite affordable setups. Even if unnecessary to underline the impact of ultrasound-based strategies in a broad range of chemical and biological applications, there is considerable misunderstanding and pitfalls regarding the interpretation of cavitational effects and the actual role played by the acoustic field. In this Perspective, with an eye on mechanisms in particular, we discuss the potentiality of sonochemistry in synthetic organic chemistry through selected examples of past and recent developments. Such examples illustrate specific controlling effects and working rules. Looking back at the past while looking forward to advancing the field, some essentials of sonochemical activation will be distilled.
Junta de Extremadura and Fondo Europeo de Desarrollo Regional (as witnessed by recent grants IB16167, IB16022, and GR18015) is warmly appreciated. Additional funding from the European Union through the EU H2020 MSCA-ETN COSMIC framework for research and training is highly acknowledged as well.

Food allergies represent a serious health concern and, since the 1990s, they have risen gradually in high-income countries. Unfortunately, the problem is complex because genetic, epigenetic, and environmental factors may be collectively involved. Prevention and diagnoses have not yet evolved into efficacious therapies. Identification and control of allergens present in edible substances hold promise for multi-purpose biomedical approaches, including oral immunotherapy. This review highlights recent studies and methods to modify the otherwise innocuous native proteins in most subjects, and how oral treatments targeting immune responses could help cancel out the potential risks in hypersensitive individuals, especially children. We have focused on some physical methods that can easily be conducted, along with chemo-enzymatic modifications of allergens by means of peptides and phytochemicals in particular. The latter, accessible from naturally-occurring substances, provide an added value to hypoallergenic matrices employing vegetal wastes, a point where food chemistry meets sustainable goals as well.

Research studies combining the decailed physicochemical properties' analysis, che catalytic activity in different real aqueous manices, the proposal of degradation mechanisms and the stability of the intem1ediates/byproducts by means of the Density-functional theory (DIT) are scarce. Therefore, this work gives a step forward in the field of circular economy and the removal of emerging pollutants such as the antibiotic ciprofloxacin, covering ali the previously aspects mentioned, using four iron and nickel-based catalysts from two different sewage sludge. Experimental results revealed a significant influence of both the source of che sewage sludge and the activating agent used (iron chlolide, nickel chlolide and a mixture of both) on the physicochemical properties of the materials and, hence, on their catalytic activity. ITIR studies and chemical composition evidenced that the use of this biomass precursor leads to the generation of a wide variety of functional groups and heteroatoms in the synthesized catalyst structure. Moreover, they showed a combination of Type 1-IV isotherms with H3-H4 type hysteresis loops, being mainly mesoporous materials and exhibiting a moderare microporosity except when nickel chloride was used solely as activating agent. The carbonaceous materials reached ciprofloxacin adsorption capacities in the range of 40.4- 73.9 mg/g. The use of nickel chloride showed the lowest adsorption connibucion and catalytic activity. The bimetallic catalyst (synthesized from a mixture of iron and nickel chloride) showed slightly higher catalytic activity than that found for the iron catalyst, but the metal leaching was also considerably higher. Consequently, the use of iron chloride solely as activating agent seems to be the better altemative, achieving a maximum ciprofloxacin removal around 99.7 % andan iron leaching concentration into the reaction medium of 0.48-0.61 mg/L. The main degradation pathways of ciprofloxacin were proposed according to the detection of LC-MS intem1ediates and DIT calculation, indicating the most likely areas of attack of reactive species on atoms with a high Fukui index (t°).

Tartrazine degradation was investigated by electrochemical and sonochemical oxidation processes. Anodic
oxidation was carried out using boron-doped diamond (BDD) electrodes. The influence of current density and
dye initial concentration on the removal of tartrazine from water was analyzed. The experimental results indicate that total removal of tartrazine was obtained, and Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) and Total Organic Carbon (TOC) removals of up to 94.4% and 72.8% were achieved, respectively. To optimize the process, the pollutant removal percentage, the kinetic rate constant, and the TOC removal efficiency were chosen as target variables. Moreover, sonochemical oxidation experiments at a high-frequency range of cavitation (up to 1 MHz) were performed to establish the influence of three different operating variables, namely ultrasound frequency (0.5–1.1 MHz), ultrasound power (2.0–26.6 W ⋅L¯¹), and pulse-stop ratio (5:1–1:1). The process was also analyzed in terms of kinetics and energy costs. The kinetics resulted to be three times faster for the electrochemical process. However, the calculated energy costs were very similar, at least at long treatment times. Finally, the influence of three aqueous matrices was investigated. According to the experimental results, the natural occurrence of chloride and/or nitrate ions in water strongly conditions the rate of the process, although at least 90% of tartrazine removal was achieved within the first 50 min of treatment.

Mesoionic rings are among the most versatile 1,3-dipoles, as witnessed recently by their incorporation into bio-orthogonal strategies, and capable of affording unconventional heterocycles beyond the expected scope of Huisgen cycloadditions. Herein, we revisit in detail the reactivity of thiazol-3-ium-4-olates with alkynes, leading to thiophene and/or pyrid-2-one derivatives. A structural variation at the parent mesoionic dipole alters sufficiently the steric outcome, thereby favoring the regioselective formation of a single transient cycloadduct, which undergoes chemoselective fragmentation to either five- or six-membered heterocycles. The synthetic protocol benefits largely from microwave (MW) activation, which enhances reaction rates. The mechanism has been interrogated with the aid of density functional theory (DFT) calculations, which sheds light into the origin of the regioselectivity and points to a predictive formulation of reactivity involving competing pathways of mesoionic cycloadditions.

This account summarizes and discusses recent examples in which the combination of ultrasonic waves and metal-based reagents, including metal nanoparticles, has proven to be a useful choice in synthetic planning. Not only does sonication often enhance the activity of the metal catalyst/reagent, but it also greatly enhances the synthetic transformation that can be conducted under milder conditions relative to conventional protocols. For the sake of clarity, we have adopted a structure according to the periodic-table elements or families, distinguishing between bulk metal reagents and nanoparticles, as well as the supported variations, thus illustrating the characteristics of the method under consideration in target synthesis. The coverage focuses essentially on the last decade, although the discussion also strikes a comparative balance between the more recent advancements and past literature.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the in vitro antimicrobial and antioxidant activities of different bran extracts and concentrations, and their influence on the parameters of a mayonnaise-type emulsion. To that end, first ethanol and then water were used to extract two rice bran extracts (RBE) from rice bran. Both these extracts were then added at two different concentrations (0.5 and 2%) to the emulsions that were subsequently analysed after seven days under two different storage temperatures, 4 °C and 20 °C. The antioxidant and antimicrobial ability of the extracts were evaluated, along with a control and a synthetic antioxidant. Results indicate the positive effect of rice bran extracts as additives in the food matrix. Ethanolic rice bran extract (EE) at 2% decreased the oxidation as well as mould and yeast proliferation and preserved the emulsion structure, while the other treatments acted in a similar way although their effect was less pronounced.

This paper describes the syntheses of new 2-glyco-3-nitro-1,2-dihydroquinolines and 2-glyco-3-nitroquinolines by one-pot aza-Michael–Henry–dehydration reactions using a minimal amount of solvent and neutral alumina as the heterogeneous catalyst. The reactivity of the nitro group–double bond system has also been investigated; thus, the addition of indole or pyrrole to N-formylated 1,2-dihydroquinolines has been studied. Finally, the cytotoxicity and antiproliferative activity of these new compounds have been evaluated against a panel of six human solid tumor cell lines and compared to pharmacological reference compounds, finding that their activity is in the low micromolar range and that the carbohydrate moiety configuration modulates the GI50 values.

This manuscript is in Memoriam of Prof. Álvaro Bernalte García, Group Leader of the Coordination Chemistry Research Group.
One of the most widely used strategies for drug development is the coordination of bioactive ligands to transition metals, which could improve biological activity. Moreover, the incorporation of aromatic groups to ligands may allow an enhanced lipophilicity that can influence the cellular uptake and accumulation of the metallodrugs, thus increasing their activity. Herein, we have reported the synthesis and characterization of four Pt(II) complexes [PtCl2(L)], where L = 2-(1-pyrazolyl)-2-thiazoline (PzTn), 2-(1-pyrazolyl)-1,3-thiazine (PzTz), 2-(3,5-diphenyl-1- pyrazolyl)-2-thiazoline (DPhPzTn) or 2-(3,5-diphenyl-1-pyrazolyl)-1,3-thiazine (DPhPzTz). The study was aimed at analysing their potential anticarcinogenic ability in epithelial cervix carcinoma HeLa, human promyelocytic leukemia HL-60 and human histiocytic lymphoma U-937 tumour cell lines as well as checking whether the structural factors of the organic ligand may influence their biological activity. Our findings showed that PtDPhPzTn and PtDPhPzTz were far more effective in terms of cytotoxicity than their less lipophilic counterparts (PtPzTn and PtPzTz), especially in cells derived from solid cervical tumours, thereby suggesting that modulating the lipophilicity of the ligands can help improve the cytotoxic effect of the metal complexes.

In this work, the sewage sludge-derived activated carbon (SAC) loaded with iron nanoparticles (FeSAC) showed a highly effective catalytic activity in the degradation of the antibiotic ciprofloxacin by the CWAO reaction. The properties of FeSAC catalyst were studied by using N2 adsorption-desorption measurements at 77 K, scanning electron microscopy, X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and thermogravimetric analysis. The CWAO reaction was evaluated at different temperatures (120–140 ºC), total pressure (10–30 bar) and catalyst doses (0.1–0.7 g/L) in a batch reactor. In this regard, temperature and catalyst dosage showed a significant impact on the removal of the tested antibiotic. By using a catalyst dose of 0.7 g/L, ciprofloxacin degradation and CO2 selectivity were higher than 99 % and 60 %, respectively, and were achieved within two hours at 140 ◦C and 20 bar. The loss of the active phase (Fe) of the catalyst in the reaction medium was measured, obtaining negligible values (less than 24 ppb). This catalyst showed high stability under the tested reaction conditions. In addition, a potential equation was proposed to correctly describe the evolution of ciprofloxacin degradation. The calculated activation energy of the CWAO process was 53.8 kJ/mol. Additionally, Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations were performed to illustrate the degradation mechanism of ciprofloxacin, where the electronic energies indicated the compounds that are most difficult to degrade by CWAO. Finally, a proof of concept using an environmentally-relevant matrix was carried out, verifying the technical feasibility of the synthesized catalyst for its application with more complex matrices, consecutive reaction cycles and at a low treatment cost.

This study explores the potential application of microfluidics in the field of bioenergy, with a particular focus on the energy potential of biogas derived from vine shoots, a locally abundant waste material. The enhanced mixing capability of a micromixer has been analyzed to make it suitable for microfluidic energy applications. Mixing index, pressure drop, and kinematic measurements within the T-micromixer with helical elements and their related mixing performances have been studied and validated using CFD for different values of Reynolds number (0.1–60) for laminar Newtonian miscible fluid. Geometrical characteristics were further examined to improve the mixing performance. Various values of twisted angles were evaluated and compared to choose the optimal angle. A new parameter, Q, was introduced to represent the ratio of vorticity square over the sum of vorticity square and deformation square intensities. Furthermore, the results of the numerical simulation were compared with the given data in the literature, showing a significant agreement, in addition to the fact that a high-quality mixture can be created with a geometry angle of and a mixing index above 0.99 can be obtained at low Reynolds numbers. The numerical investigation of the Flow regimes of miscible fluid in the T-microkenics with the proposed angle can be utilized to develop the mixing performance of the micromixers in a wide variety of processes.
