José María Arguedas y el mestizaje cultural (I)

Abstract

José María Arguedas es uno de los escritores andinos más importantes de Iberoamérica. Sus distintas facetas de narrador, poeta, antropólogo, viajero, ensayista y profesor proyectan un mismo mensaje: el de reivindicar la cultura india quechua y el de buscar, como mestizo que era, alguna articulación entre dos mundos enfrentados en su país, el mundo de origen hispano-criollo y el de origen indígena. En este artículo, que tendrá dos partes, se trata de profundizar en el mestizaje literario y cultural que él representa.

José María Arguedas is one of the most important Andean writers of South America. Whether as a writer of prose fiction, poet, anthropologist, traveller, essayist or teacher his message is the same: the need to vindicate Quechua culture and find, as the product of racial mix himself, some sort of fit between the conflicting worlds of his country, the world of the Hispano-Creole and that of indigenous origin. The purpose of this article, which has two parts, is to explore the literary and cultural mix that he represents.
