El castillo de Medellín y la construcción del estado señorial

Abstract

La nobleza bajomedieval dotó a sus dominios de una estructura administrativa jerarquizada, en el que un centro asumía las funciones propias de capitalidad y sede del poder, el estado señorial. En esta reestructuración del dominio señorial, los castillos desempeñaron una función clave como elementos articuladores del territorio. En base a estos principios, analizaremos en este artículo las causas que, en la segunda mitad del siglo XV, obstaculizaron la formación del estado señorial de Medellín, perteneciente al linaje Portocarrero, así como el modo en que el castillo de esta población refleja en su configuración arquitectónica las singulares circunstancias que definen la temprana historia del condado.

The late medieval nobility endowed their domains with a hierarchical administrative structure, in which a center assumed the functions of capitalism and power headquarter, that is the manorial state. In this restructuration of the lordly domain, castles played a key role as articulating elements of the territory. On the basis of these principles, we will analyze in this article the causes that, in the second half of the 15th century, hindered the formation of the Medellin manorial state, belonging to the Portocarrero lineage, as well as the way in which the castle of this village reflects in its architectural configuration the unique circumstances that define the county´s early history.
