A vueltas con la censura del siglo XIX: un nuevo drama inédito y reprobado

Abstract

Este trabajo examina dos obras de teatro inéditas con el mismo contenido, descubiertas en la Biblioteca Nacional de Madrid. Se trata de La estrella del infortunio e Infamia por interés, escritas a mediados del siglo XIX y censuradas por diversos motivos. Así, en los textos se pueden ver delitos contra la moral individual y colectiva (robos, embarazos extramatrimoniales, ambición sin límites, engaño y extorsión, entre otros). A esto hay que añadir la severa crítica que hace una de las obras a las instituciones públicas, la posibilidad de sobornar a sus representantes y el mal funcionamiento del sistema judicial. Además, estos textos presentan numerosos fallos técnicos (tramas rezagadas, situaciones increíbles) y defectos de calidad (historias banales, personajes previsibles) que hicieron imposible que la junta de censura los aprobara.

This paper examines two unpublished plays with the same contents discovered in the National Library in Madrid. They are La estrella del infortunio and Infamia por interés, written in the míd 19th century and censored for various reasons. Thus in the texts one can see offences against individual and collective morals (theft, extra-marital pregnancies, limitless ambítion, deception, and extortion, among others). To this must be added the severe criticism levelled by one of the plays at public institutíons, the possihility of bribing its representatives and the malfunctioning of the legal system. These texts also display numerous technical faults (straggling plot, incredible situations) and defects of quality (commonplace stories, predictable characters) which made it impossible for the board of censors to approve them.
