A memoria e o futuro: processos de reescritura em João de Melo

Abstract

En este artículo trataremos procesos de reescritura utilizados por João de Melo en obras que se centran en la guerra colonial portuguesa. Seguimos la perspectiva de la llamada «nueva filología», que combina el estudio de rasgos estilísticos de los textos literarios con la discusión de cuestiones más amplias que van desde su poética propia a las teorías literarias que su lectura presente implica. Entre esas cuestiones destacaremos la reescritura como práctica que obliga a relacionar el posmodernismo y el postcolonialismo, la relación entre hecho y ficción o el tema de la memoria dolorosa de la guerra y la inexistencia de futuro. La guerra se presenta metafóricamente como un mar de donde no se regresa y sin regreso no hay futuro, tan sólo un presente amenazado.

The aim of this article is the analysis of the rewriting procedures used by João de Melo in his works dealing with the Portuguese colonial war. I follow the perspective of the so-called «new philology», which combines the study of stylistic devices in literary texts with the discussion of other issues, such as the ones concerned with Poetics or the theoretical problems raised by modern readership. I am mainly concerned with three aspects: Rewriting as a procedure that leads to the difficult relationship between Postmodernism and Post-colonialism, the ambiguities between fact and fiction, and the theme of War's painful memories added to the absence of Future. The war is metaphorically depicted as a sea motif from where there is no coming back; thus, with no journey home, there is no future either, only a menaced present.
