El reablo mayor de la ermita de Ntra. Sra. de Sopetrán, en Jarandilla de la Vera (Cáceres)

Abstract

El fervor del pueblo de Jarandilla hacia la advocación mariana de Sopetrán, hunde sus raíces en los siglos bajomedievales e incardina su existencia en la antigua narración acaecida el año del Señor de 1374: la plaga de langostas que padecía por estos años todo el obispado atacó con especial virulencia las cosechas jarandillanas, que, a la postre, se vieron sometidas a los efectos desbastadores de «vn gusano pestilencia!, que pegandose a los arboles, les chupaba el jugo, y substancia »; reunido el pueblo en Concejo abierto, decidieron hacer voto anual a Ntra. Sra. de un cirio de cera de dos arrobas de peso, y para determinar la iglesia en la que se habría de llevar a cabo la ofrenda, dispusieron colocar el cirio sobre un jumento al que conducirían a los santuarios de Ntra. Sra. de Guadalupe, Montserrat y Sopetrán (Guadalajara): la parada que hizo el animal en este último fue decisiva para encaminar las plegarias, recompensadas con el fin de las plagas.
