Giovanni Verga in Portogallo

Abstract

Las obras de Giovanni Verga han sido traducidas en todo el mundo, tanto en el pasado como en el presente siglo. Su producción literaria ha fascinado a los traductores, cuyo arduo trabajo ha hecho famoso al autor, sobre todo después de su muerte en 1922. Aparentemente, los intelectuales portugueses no parecen haber mostrado un interés especial por Verga, como demuestran también las pocas traducciones presentes en portugués. En este breve artículo, hablaremos de las traducciones al portugués de Giovanni Verga y de su circulación en Portugal y Brasil gracias a la prensa de la época.

Giovanni Verga’s masterpieces have been translated throughout the world over the past and even over this current century. His literary production has fascinated a plethora of translators who contributed to the propagation of his fame out of Italy, especially after his death in 1922. Apparently, Portuguese intellectuals have not shown much interest towards this Sicilian author and as a matter of fact few translations have been recollected. In this short work, we will discuss about Giovanni Verga’s translations in Portuguese and the circulation of his works in Portugal and Brazil thanks to the press.

Le opere di Giovanni Verga sono state tradotte in tutto il mondo sia nel passato che nel secolo attuale. La sua produzione letteraria ha affascinato traduttori i quali, grazie al loro arduo lavoro, hanno reso famoso l’autore, specialmente dopo la sua morte avvenuta nel 1922. Apparentemente, gli intellettuali portoghesi non sembra aver dimostrato particolare interesse per Verga anche come provato dalle poche traduzioni presenti in portoghese.
