Active ageing: mapping of scientific coverage

Abstract

El envejecimiento de la población es uno de los mayores logros de la humanidad con los ancianos que ofrecen valiosos recursos y hacen una importante contribución a la estructura de nuestras sociedades. Al mismo tiempo, este envejecimiento de la población plantea grandes desafíos, ya que requiere mayores necesidades económicas y sociales. Instituciones como la Organización Mundial de la Salud (OMS) están promoviendo políticas destinadas a fomentar el envejecimiento activo, entendido como el proceso de optimización de las oportunidades de salud, participación y seguridad para mejorar la calidad de vida de las personas a medida que envejecen. El objetivo principal de este estudio es identificar la producción científica relacionada con el área del envejecimiento activo. La metodología de trabajo utilizada es el análisis bibliométrico de los artículos indexados en las bases de datos multidisciplinariasWoS y Scopus. Se seleccionaron 171 artículos enWoS y 234 en Scopus, con un plazo límite en 2017. En el análisis realizado se observa que el envejecimiento activo es un tema que ha despertado interés entre los investigadores en los últimos años, prueba de ello es el aumento tanto del número de artículos publicados en revistas científicas como de las citas recibidas. La base de datos Scopus presenta una mayor cobertura del tema. El índice de solapamiento muestra que Scopus cubre el 90,06% de los artículos de la WoS y su índice de Documentos Únicos es del 34,19% frente al 9,94% de la WoS.

Population ageing is one of humanity’s greatest achievements with the elderly who offer valuable resources and make an important contribution to the structure of our societies. At the same time, this ageing population poses great challenges, as it requires greater economic and social needs. Institutions such as the World Health Organization (WHO) are promoting policies that aim at promoting active ageing, which is understood as the process of optimizing health, participation and security opportunities in order to improve people’s quality of life as they get older. The main objective of this study is to identify scientific production related to the area of Active Ageing. The work methodology used is the bibliometric analysis of the articles indexed in the multidisciplinary databasesWoS and Scopus. There were 171 articles inWoS and 234 in Scopus that were selected, with a time limit in 2017. In the analysis carried out it is observed that active ageing is a topic that has aroused interest among researchers in recent years, proof of this is the increase both in the number of articles published in scientific journals and in the citations received. The Scopus database presents a greater coverage of the subject. The Overlap Index shows that Scopus covers 90.06% of the WoS articles and its Single Documents index is 34.19% versus 9.94% of WoS.
