La alegoría de la sabiduría en el manuscrito de la segunda edición de las Introductiones latinae de Antonio de Nebrija (BNE. Vitr.17/1)

Abstract

Estudio iconográfico de la iluminación de los dos primeros folios de la copia manuscrita de la segunda edición de las Introductiones latinae de Antonio de Nebrija. Por medio del análisis de algunos motivos e imágenes de la pintura y de la mentalidad de la nobleza a través de algunos tratados castellanos cuatrocentistas, se ha realizado una nueva interpretación de la imagen dibujada por el miniaturista en los dos primeros folios de este manual de gramática latina, texto que formó parte de la biblioteca del último maestre de la Orden de Alcántara, don Juan de Zúñiga y Pimentel, y que hoy se conserva en la Biblioteca Nacional de España. Este artículo nos acerca a la historia cultural de finales del siglo XV, al valor de la sabiduría como símbolo de prestigio y de poder y a la virtud del noble caballero que alcanza la fama por el saber y por la protección de los sabios y letrados.

Iconographic study of the illumination of the first two pages of the handwritten copy of the second edition of Antonio de Nebrija’s Introductiones latinae. Through the analysis of some motifs and images in painting and the mentality of the nobility through some castilian treatises from the 15th century, a new interpretation of the image drawn by the miniaturist in the first two pages of this latin grammar manual has been made. This text was part of the library of the last master of the Order of Alcántara, Don Juan de Zúñiga y Pimentel, and is now preserved in the National Library of Spain. This article brings us closer to the cultural history of the late 15th century, to the value of wisdom as a symbol of prestige and power, and to the virtue of the noble knight who achieves fame through knowledge and the protection of scholars and literati.
