“El papagayo y la serpiente”: historia natural de una empresa de Diego Saavedra Fajardo

Abstract

En una de las empresas – "Consilia consiliis frustantur" – de la "Idea de un Principe Politico Christiano", tratado de contenido ético-político del diplomático y escritor Diego Saavedra Fajardo, destinado a la formación integral de los aspirantes al trono hispano, se adopta como idea inspiradora un curioso episodio animalístico protagonizado por un papagayo y una serpiente. Tanto el relato como la imagen grabada que lo complementa proceden de determinados libros de viajes, cosmografías y tratados zoológicos del siglo XVI, referentes que resultan muy poco habituales en la literatura simbólica y emblemática del momento, de modo especial en el ámbito español. En el presente trabajo se ofrece un seguimiento de las posibles fuentes literarias y plásticas de la divisa del autor murciano desde sus orígenes, atendiendo de igual modo a la presencia del motivo en los distintos tipos de escritos tanto de talante científico como didáctico-moralizante durante la Edad Moderna.

In one the impresas – “Consilia consiliis frustantur”– from the “Idea de un Principe Politico Christiano” ("Idea of the Christian Political Prince"), the ethical-political treatise by the diplomat and writer Diego Saavedra Fajardo, which addressed the integral formation of those aspiring to the Spanish throne, there is an inspiring idea in the form of a curious animalistic episode protagonized by a parrot and a serpent. Both the account and the engravings which complement it are based on travel books, cosmographies and zoological treatises of the sixteenth century, unusual references in the symbolic and emblematic literature of the time, especially in the Spanish context. The present study offers a review of the possible literary and artistic sources in the insignia of this Murcian author throughout his work, and of the presence of motif in the different types of writing, both scientific and didactic-moralistic, of the Modern Age.
