Presencia femenina durante la Guerra del Pacífico. El caso de las Rabonas

Abstract

Si bien la presencia femenina está registrada en los ejércitos de América Latina desde las épocas más remotas es, a partir del siglo XIX cuando esta, a través de la rabona, «complemento necesario del soldado peruano, sin el cual no tendría ni resignación ni valor», comienza a llamar la atención a viajeros y literatos nacionales, así como a los artistas plásticos que la plasman en pinturas y grabados. El vocablo rabona esconde el nombre de miles de mujeres anónimas. Oculta la vida de millares de féminas que, sin buscar reconocimiento, desapercibidamente ayudaron a construir la historia «mínima», quehacer indispensable para poder escribir la gran historia del Perú estruc¬turada en torno a próceres, héroes y caudillos durante las guerras de emancipación, intervención y conflictos fratricidas internos por alcanzar el poder. En esta oportunidad nos detendremos en aquellas referidas a la Guerra del Pacífico (1879-1883).

While the presence of women is to be registered in Latin American armies from the earliest times, it was from the nineteenth century when the female presence, by means of the ‘rabona’ person, began to be noticed by travelers and domestic writers, as well as artists representing them in their drawings and paintings. These faithful and enduring creatures, «a necessary complement of Peruvian soldiers and without which there would be neither endurance nor courage for them,» followed the army during long, weary marches, carrying the knapsacks and cooking utensils and sometimes an infant strapped on their backs The word ‘rabona’ hides the name of thousands of anonymous women. It conceals the lives of thousands of women who, without seeking recognition, inadvertently helped to build the «small» history, essential to write the great history of Peru, structured around the founding fathers, heroes and warlords during the Independence wars and fratricidal conflicts for power. This time we will focus on those related to the Pacific War (1879-1883).
