La iconografía mariana en la Catedral de Puebla (México)

Abstract

La catedral mexicana de Puebla de los Ángeles conserva un amplio acervo pictórico de te-mática mariana que viene a reforzar no sólo la advocación del templo, dedicado a la Inmaculada Concepción, sino también la herencia española hacia el culto mariano. Los artistas coloniales han sucumbido ante la rica iconografía mariológica, creando obras de indudable encanto para el patrimonio pictórico novohispano que nos presentan las más importantes advocaciones. De las tradicionales vírgenes españolas a las más importantes para el culto popular mexicano, la catedral de Puebla atesora una interesante colección pictórica que subraya la preferencia de los artistas hacia estas temáticas.

The Mexican cathedral of Puebla de los Ángeles keeps a vast pictorial collection with Marian topics which reinforces, not only the temple’s dedication to the Immaculate Conception, it also reinforces the Spanish heritage to the Marian cult. The colonial artists fell under the spell of the rich Marian iconography, creating works of unquestionable charm for the novohispanic pictorial heritage which present to us the most important Marian denominations. From the traditional Spanish virgins to the most important ones for Mexican popular cult, the cathedral of Puebla treasures an interesting pictorial collection which shows the preferences of the artists for this kind of topics.
