El oficio del humanista. Retrocesos y progresos

Abstract

Frente a las adversidades del momento presente, los humanistas (profesores e investigadores del Área de Humanidades) se refugian, en ocasiones, en la evocación de una “edad dorada”. La verdad, sin embargo, es que no es posible identificar una época en la que los conocimientos humanistas hayan florecido alguna vez sin desconfianza y sin un escrutinio severo. Aun admitiendo que la legitimación "externa" constituye un importante desafío en cualquier época, entendemos que las energías no deben agotarse en la “guerra de culturas” que, al menos desde hace siglo y medio, viene enfrentando las Humanidades a otras áreas de saber. No puede olvidarse, sobre todo, que todos los campos del conocimiento necesitan de un auto examen regular y valiente, con el fin de corregir excesos y de adecuarse a las necesidades de los nuevos tiempos. La reflexión que estamos considerando pretende exactamente contribuir con esa auto evaluación, de modo que el “retroceso” que, en ocasiones, se defiende en las ciencias humanas pueda también traducirse en un “progreso” efectivo.

Due to the adversities of the present, the humanists (teachers and researchers from the Humanities ‘area) seek refuge in the illusion of a golden age. The truth is, though, that it is not possible to identify one era in which the humanistic has flourished without distrust nor severe scrutiny. Although admitting that the “external” legitimation is an important challenge to any area, we understand that we mustn’t run out of energy during the “war of cultures” that has been putting the Humanities against the other areas of knowledge for at least one and a half centuries. We cannot forget that all the domains of knowledge need a regular and brave self-assessment in order to correct the excesses and suit the needs of the new times. This reflection is aimed precisely to contribute to this selfassessment, so that the return that sometimes defends the humanities can also transform into effective progress.
