En defensa del “Ars memorativa”. Edición, traducción y estudio de los capítulos preliminares del “Congestorium artificiosae memoriae” de I. Romberch

Abstract

El presente trabajo versa sobre los tres primeros capítulos del “Congestorium artificiosae memoriae” (1520 y 1533) de Johannes Host von Romberch. Tras situar la obra en la peripecia vital de este dominico alemán al servicio del Inquisidor general de Colonia y en el contexto de la producción bibliográfica de su época, analizamos el contenido esos capítulos del “Congestorium”. En el primero de ellos, “De possibilitate, necessitate et utilitate artis memorativae”, Romberch expone la utilidad y la necesidad del arte de la memoria en todos los ámbitos, no solo en el contexto académico o religioso; en el segundo, “De refutatione detractionum artis et commendatione eius”, trata de defender el método per locos et imagines de las acusaciones de sus detractores; y, en el tercero, “Quibus ars memoriae conveniat et quando ea utendum sit”, refuerza la utilidad del “ars” para ciertos profesionales y explica los momentos en los que se debe usar, sirviéndose, para ello, de ejemplos propios. Señalamos las fuentes argumentales en las que se inspira y la pervivencia de sus ideas en obras posteriores. En suma, exponemos la importancia de esta obra en la historia del “ars memorativa”.

This work is about the first three chapters of the “Congestorium artificiosae memoriae” (1520 and 1533) by Johannes Host von Romberch. After setting the treatise in the author’s life, being a German dominican who served somehow the general inquisitor of Cologne, and in the context of that years bibliographic production, we analise the subject of these chapters. In the first one, “De possibilitate, necessitate et utilitate artis memorativae”, Romberch exposes the usefulness and necessity of the art of memory in every ambit, not only in academic or religious contexts; in the second one, “De refutatione detractionum artis et commendatione eius”, he tries to defend the method per locos et imagines from its detractor’s indictments; and, in the third one, “Quibus ars memoriae conveniat et quando ea utendum sit”, he strengthens the usefulness of ars for some professionals and he explains when it is convenient to use it, including personal examples. We point out the argumental sources that inspire Romberch and how his ideas survive in the following works. In conclusion, we expose the importance of this treatise in the ars memorativa’s history.
