The devotion to Our Lady of Guadalupe of Caceres (Spain) started in medieval times; its iconography, particularly sculpture, will evolve throughout the centuries. During the 16th century, the devotion and iconography of the Virgin of Guadalupe traveled to America through engravings; the travel and work of fray Diego de Ocaña, who wrote his memories of the journey, helped to diffuse this devotion in South America, where quickly became indisputably popular. His journey will be the subject of the second part of this article. One of the most notable American images is the one created by Diego de Ocaña in Sucre (Bolivia), which continues to be the patron of the city. |
