Despair has the last word in the second version of “The Tower”; that is, the relinquishment of the utopian ideal of the poetic symbol as uniting the perceptible and the supraperceptible and the resulting silence to which Prince Segismundo is condemned. This is the definitive reply to the questions about the legitimacy of poetry and the mediating function of the poet (a reply supported by Walter Benjamin's piece on German baroque drama) which plagued Hofmannsthal from the time of Lord Chandos linguistic and existential crisis. |
