José María Arguedas is one of the most important Andean writers of South America. Whether as a writer of prose fiction, poet, anthropologist, traveller, essayist or teacher his message is the same: the need to vindicate Quechua culture and find, as the product of racial mix himself, some sort of fit between the conflicting worlds of his country, the world of the Hispano-Creole and that of indigenous origin. The purpose of this article, which has two parts, is to explore the literary and cultural mix that he represents. |
