El lector y la información narrativa en "La reina de las nieves" de Carmen Martín Gaite

Abstract

Siguiendo una tendencia generalizada en la literatura del Siglo XX, la narrativa de Carmen Martín Gaite requiere la participación activa del lector en el proceso de creación de la obra literaria. En varias ocasiones, el autor ha tratado teóricamente sobre este asunto, y éste es el análisis de este tipo que se hace en la primera parte del artículo. A continuación, el artículo muestra dos formas en las que Carmen Martin Gaite involucra al lector en la historia de "La reina de las Nieves". En primer lugar, se analiza el impacto que un narrador en primera persona -que apenas puede distinguir entre la ficción y la realidad y que está enfermo o bajo la influencia de alguna sustancia- tiene sobre el lector como narrador fiable. Luego, pasa a considerar la forma en que la información se oculta en varias ocasiones para el lector, por lo que éste no tiene suficiente información para hacer una evaluación equilibrada de los sucesos. En conclusión, el artículo examina la falta de fiabilidad del narrador y el ocultamiento de información en las partes primera y tercera de la novela.

Following a generalized tendency in 20th century literature, Carmen Martín Gaite’s narrative requires the reader's active participation in the process of creation of the literary work. On a number of occasions the author has dealt theoretically with this matter, and it is to the analysis of such reflections that the first part of the article is devoted. Next, the article shows two ways in which Carmen Martin Gaite involves the reader in the story of “La reina de las Nieves”. In the first place, it analyses the impact that a first person narrator -who can hardly distinguish between fiction and reality and who is ill or under the influence of some substance- has on the reader's view of the narrator's reliability. Then it goes on to consider the way in which information is repeatedly concealed from the reader, so that’s he does not have enough information to make a balanced assessment of events. Finally, the article looks into the unreliability of the narrator and the concealment of information in the first and third parts of the novel.
