El sistema de engarce narrativo de los discursos de Tucídides

Abstract

El objetivo de este trabajo es el estudio de los engarces de los discursos de Tucídides, analizando sus componentes, funciones y todos los elementos que constituyen el sistema utilizado por el historiador para combinar narración y discurso en un todo coherente. Hasta ahora, los críticos no han prestado la suficiente atención a estos elementos, que son decisivos para la interrelación entre discurso y narración, pero con frecuencia han sido analizados como simple transición pasajes. Demostramos, sin embargo, que los engarces constituyen un sistema en el cual se pueden distinguir tres niveles. Cada uno cumple funciones diferentes pero complementarias, en función del tipo de discurso introducido y su interrelación con la narración de los hechos.

The aim of this paper is to study the settings of the speeches of Thucydides, analysing their components, functions and all the elements that constitute the system used by the historian to combine narration and speech in a coherent whole. Up till now, critics haven't paid enough attention to these elements, which are decisive for the interrelation between speech and narration, but frequently have been analysed as simple transition passages. We demonstrate, however, that those settings constitute a system in which three levels can be distinguished. Each one fulfils different but complementary functions, depending on the kind of introduced speech and its interrelation with the narration of the facts.
