"Rhetoric in the" Estoria de Espanna "of Alfonso el Sabio"

Abstract

Los autores de las dos historias Alfonsina son quizás más gramáticos que retóricos; las libres versiones castellanas de su latín original se destacan más por su claridad, que por su elocuencia. Los editores, sin embargo, aplican dos figuras de la retórica habitual en todo su texto,"transitio” y “aetiologia". Algunos pasajes de la "Estoria de Espanna" van mucho más allá. Hay dos relatos dramáticos que aplican dos figuras Quintilianesca de amplificación, "comparatio” y” ratiocination". Otras secciones muestran una especie de prosa cuasi-clásica, destacando por su ingeniosa "isocola" y antítesis, y marcada por una prosa rítmica. Esta última característica puede sugerir que los compiladores tenían conocimientos de "ars dictaminis".

The redactors of the two Alfonsine histories are perhaps more grammatical than rhetorical; the free Castilian versions of their Latin originals are more notable for their clarity than for their eloquence. The editors do, however, apply two figures of rhetoric routinely throughout their text, “transitio and aetiologia” A few passages on the “Estoria de Espanna” go much further. Two narratives there feature dramatic application of two Quintilianesque figures of amplification, “comparatio and ratiocination”. Other sections display a sort of quasi-classical prose, notable for its artful “isocola” and antitheses, and marked by a fine concern for prose rhythm. This last feature might suggest that the compilers had some knowledge of the “ars dictaminis”.
