Nuestras fortalezas III: El castillo de Capilla. La inespugnable fortaleza de Kabbal

Abstract

La ubicación de Capilla como encrucijada de caminos, así como la abundancia de recursos explica su emplazamiento y la extraordinaria riqueza de su historia. Desde la prehistoria y la protohistoria, pasando por las etapas romana y musulmana Capilla y su entorno han sido testigos del paso de los siglos, que ha dejado allí una huella imborrable. Quizá el elemento más significativo de ese pasado sea su magnífico castillo, de construcción musulmana, aunque el edificio que hoy podemos visitar data del siglo XV. El recinto fue protagonista en el siglo XIII de uno de los episodios más destacados de la Reconquista en Extremadura, el asedio al que durante 14 semanas le sometieron las tropas cristianas del Rey Fernando III “el santo”. A pesar de la dureza de los combates las imponentes defensas del castillo (entonces alcazaba) resistieron y forzaron al monarca castellano y a los sitiados a buscar un acuerdo para solucionar la situación. En los últimos años se están realizando una serie de excavaciones arqueológicas en el castillo y su entorno que tienen como objetivo redescubrir la grandeza del pasado de Capilla.

The location of Capilla as a crossroads, as well as the abundance of resources explains its location and the extraordinary richness of its history. From prehistory and protohistory, passing through the Roman and Muslim stages, the Chapel and its surroundings have witnessed the passing of the centuries, which has left an indelible mark there. Perhaps the most significant element of that past is its magnificent castle, of Muslim construction, although the building that we can visit today dates from the 15th century. The enclosure was the protagonist in the thirteenth century of one of the most outstanding episodes of the Reconquest in Extremadura, the siege to which the Christian troops of King Fernando III “the saint” subjected it for 14 weeks. Despite the harshness of the fighting, the imposing defenses of the castle (then the citadel) resisted and forced the Castilian monarch and the besieged to seek an agreement to solve the situation. In recent years, a series of archaeological excavations have been carried out in the castle and its surroundings that aim to rediscover the greatness of Capilla's past.
