Los orígenes de Don Benito: Entre la leyenda y la historia

Abstract

La investigación, que se encuentra en una fase inicial, pretende arrojar luz sobre los orígenes fundacionales de Don Benito a través de la búsqueda de documentos y/o pruebas históricas que den un sustento científico a los mismos. Por ello, el punto de partida es el destierro, por la ausencia de rigor científico, de la hipótesis legendaria de los hermanos Don Benito y Don Llorente, según la cual éstos, hijos del Conde regente, habrían fundado sobre terrenos cedidos por su padre dos aldeas vecinas, denominadas con sus respectivos nombres, en lo que puede entenderse como la fundación en una fecha indeterminada de estas localidades. Como no puede ser de otra forma, la pretensión de este trabajo es muy humilde, y sus objetivos son tres: (1) Retirar definitivamente la hipótesis fundacional de los dos hermanos a la condición de leyenda, apartándola del ámbito de la realidad histórica; (2) Hacer una revisión de la literatura existente al respecto, incidiendo en las hipótesis fundacionales ya propuestas y planteando otras; y (3) Contribuir, por medio del trabajo bibliográfico y de archivo, a la búsqueda de indicios o pruebas que refuercen y/o debiliten dichas hipótesis.

This research, which is at an early stage, aims to shed light on the origins of Don Benito's founding through the search of documents and/or historical evidences to give a scientific basis to them. Therefore, the starting point is the exile, due to the absence of scientific rigor, of the legendary hypothesis of the brothers Don Benito and Don Llorente, according to which these brothers, sons of the regent Count, have founded on lands donated by his father two neighboring villages, with their names called, as can be seen as the foundation of these locations in an unspecified date. Since it can not be otherwise, the aim of this work is very humble, and its objectives are threefold: (1) Remove definitively the foundational assumption of the two brothers to the status of legend, keeping away from the historical reality; (2) To review the literature existing about it, focusing on the proposed foundational assumptions and on the presentation of other new ones; and (3) To contribute, through bibliographic and archival work, to the search of evidences that strengthen and/or weaken these assumptions.
