Fábrica electro-harinera del “Arroyo del Campo” (1890-1900). Un bello ejemplar del patrimonio industrial extremeño en riesgo de desaparición.

Abstract

La fábrica electro-harinera del “Arroyo del Campo”, situada entre Don Benito y Villanueva de la Serena, en Badajoz, es uno de los más bellos ejemplares de patrimonio industrial extremeño aún en pie. Construida entre 1890 y 1900 por obra del Maestro Félix González, se encargaba de la producción de harina, así como del suministro de energía eléctrica para la ciudad. Paralelamente, existieron otras dos fábricas similares en Don Benito, pero lamentablemente desaparecieron y tan sólo ésta sobrevive. La fábrica vivió tiempos muy prósperos a lo largo del siglo XX, llegando a tener más de 100 empleados, y fue una de las más importantes electro-harineras de toda Extremadura. Sin embargo, el declive de la industria harinera en el último cuarto del siglo XX frenó su actividad, y con ello se abandonó el edificio. Desde entonces y como consecuencia de su falta de mantenimiento, la fábrica comenzó a deteriorarse rápidamente y, en 2009, gran parte de las naves del conjunto fueron demolidas, dado su estado de ruina. De todo el conjunto, tan solo la nave principal queda en pie, y si no se toman medidas de conservación importantes acabará corriendo la misma suerte que el resto del edificio, desapareciendo así uno de los escasos y más hermosos edificios del patrimonio industrial extremeño.

The electricity and flour factory of the "Arroyo del Campo", located between Don Benito and Villanueva de la Serena, in Badajoz, is one of the most beautiful examples of the Extremadura´s industrial heritage that still remains standing. It was built between 1890 and 1900 by the master builder Félix González, and it produced flour as well as electric power for the town. Moreover, there were also two other similar factories in Don Benito, but unfortunately they were demolished, and it is only this one that is still standing. The factory lived prosperous times throughout the twentieth century. It had more than 100 employees, and it was one of the most important electricity and flour factories all around Extremadura. However, the decline of the flour industry during the last quarter of the twentieth century put an end to its activity, and with that it was abandoned. Since then and as a result of its lack of maintenance, the factory began to deteriorate itself rapidly, and in 2009, most warehouse buildings of the complex were pulled out, given its dilapidated state. Of all the complex, only the main factory building remains standing. But if major preservation measures are not taken soon it will end up pulled out as the rest of the building complex, and therefore one of the few and most beautiful building of the Extremadura´s industrial heritage will disappear forever.
