Estereotipos y prejuicio étnico hacia los mapuches en textos complementarios a la asignatura de Historia

Abstract

En este trabajo se analiza el discurso acerca de la cultura mapuche en el texto Suplemento de Historia de Chile, el "Icarito" del Diario La Tercera, y en el discurso de padres de alumnos de escuelas básicas de la ciudad de Temuco que utilizan dicho suplemento como material de apoyo para la resolución de tareas de sus hijos. Los hallazgos muestran que sus contenidos difunden estereotipos y prejuicios respecto de este grupo indígena, ejemplo de ello es la presencia sistemática en la opinión de los padres entrevistados de atribuciones negativas como "violentos", "salvajes", "sin educación", "sin cultura", "pobres", "diferenciados por sus rasgos físicos". Estos prejuicios son reproducidos por los lectores de este Suplemento lo que lleva a éstos a manifestar y reproducir actitudes discriminatorias hacia los mapuches.

This article focuses on the view about the Mapuche culture, first on the discourse analysis of articles about this culture in "Icarito", a booklet published by the newspaper La Tercera and which is a complementary text of the school subject History of Chile. Besides, this work also facuses on the discourse - concernig this indigenous group- of the parents of elementary school students of Temuco, Chile, who use this booklet. The most relevant findings show that the contents of the "Icarito" texts reveal prejudices and stereotypes about the Mapuche people. Examples of these are negative attributions such as "violent'', "savage", "uneducated", "without culture", and "differentiated due to their physical appearance". These prejudiced expressions are reproduced by the parents who help their children with their homework promoting discriminatory altitudes towards the members of the Mapuche culture.
