Comunidad y fraternidad: Fray Juan Márquez (1564-1621) y la provincia agustiniana de Castilla

Abstract

La provincia agustiniana de Castilla intentó borrar las huellas de la crisis que azotó a la Orden de San Agustín en los preliminares de la Reforma luterana, desarrollando una corriente de espiritualidad adaptada a los objetivos de la Contrarreforma. Fray Juan Márquez fue uno de los baluartes de la renovación espiritual que conoció la orden en la segunda mitad del siglo XVI, transitando por el abrupto paisaje religioso en el que terminó germinando el espíritu de la recolección. Sin embargo, aquellas transformaciones no podían llevarse a cabo sin aplicar una profunda reforma de la vida comunitaria, proyecto del que surgieron posiciones antagónicas que cuestionaron el principio de fraternidad monástica. Teniendo en cuenta estas premisas, y a la luz de una documentación tanto manuscrita como impresa, en el presente trabajo analizaremos las relaciones que mantuvo el padre Márquez con su familia religiosa, su idea de vita communis y los esfuerzos de la provincia agustiniana de Castilla por mantener la unidad fraternal y la concordia dentro de la comunidad.

The Augustinian province of Castile tried to erase the traces of the crisis that hit the Order of Saint Augustine at the beginning of the Lutheran Reformation, by deve-loping a form of spirituality adapted to the objectives of the Counter-Reformation. Friar Juan Márquez was one of the bastions of spiritual renewal experienced by the Order in the second half of the 16th century. He had to cross the rugged religious landscape in which the spirit of recollection ended up flourishing. However, those transformations could not be carried out without conducting a deep reform of community life. Thus arose antagonistic positions that questioned the principle of monastic fraternity. Bearing these premises in mind, and in the light of the manuscript and printed documents, in this work we will analyze the relationships that Father Márquez maintained with his religious family, his idea of vita communis and the efforts provided by the Augustinian province of Castile to establish fraternal unity and harmony within the community.
