Alciato y el poder de la palabra: poesía, retórica y jeroglíficos

Abstract

Este artículo pretende aclarar algunos aspectos de la relación entre texto e ilustración en los emblemas de Alciato, basándose únicamente en la información que proporcionan los textos. Así, el artículo se centra en el estudio de la naturaleza del epigrama que sirve de base al emblema. Se hace referencia a algunos ejemplos de la posible influencia de la retórica de Erasmo en Alciato; se abordan las similitudes y diferencias entre la estructura del jeroglífico y la del emblema; por último, se considera la actitud de Alciato frente a los grabados que acompañaban sus ediciones.

This article aims to clarify some aspects of the relationship between text and illustration in the emblems by Alciato relying solely on the information provided by the texts. Thus, the paper focuses on the study of the nature of the epigram on which the emblem is based. Reference is made to some examples of the possible influence of Erasmus' rhetoric on Alciato; the similarities and differences between the structure of the hieroglyph and that of the emblem are dealt with; finally, Alciato's attitude towards the engravings included in his published works is considered.
