This doctoral thesis consists of a compendium of three research publications whose common objective is to analyze the application of gamification and crowdsourcing in Higher Education. In the first study we examine whether it is possible to match the interests of the digital society (i.e., skill development), the academy (i.e., academic performance) and the students (i.e., their satisfaction) in Higher Education by analyzing whether the introduction of gamification in an active learning experience affects each of them. We conclude that gamification results in satisfying active learning experiences without loss of academic performance that develop key skills for the digital society. In the second study we address gamified crowdsourcing in Higher Education, developing a theoretical framework and applying it to a real case: #ECOTUBEX2018, an initiative that promotes students' creativity and skills. The relevance of the proposal lies in its novelty and its generalization to other university contexts interested in providing mechanisms that encourage participation and engagement of individuals. In the third study we analyze the application of crowdsourcing during the COVID-19 pandemic. We identify various factors that may have affected its development and study four cases created during the pandemic that are framed in different domains, including Higher Education. Valuable lessons emerge that help to better understand how crowdsourcing works and that may be useful for its application in Higher Education as well as in other sectors.
