This article analyses one of the recurring motifs in the Carmina figurata, the syrinx or shepherd´s flute. The study of poem XXVII of Optatianus Porfyrius, based on the earlier composition of Theocritus of Syracuse, constitutes the core of this analysis. Two interesting imitations or later developments of the porfyrian poem, written by the medieval Eugenius Vulgarius and the humanist Fortunius Licetus, are also analysed. |
