La evolución del icono de Venus en la visualidad occidental: del mito a la sensualidad

Abstract

A través del presente trabajo planteamos el análisis de la evolución a lo largo del arte occidental del imaginario de una de las deidades más populares de la mitología clásica: Afrodita/Venus. Para ello, partiendo de diversas referencias antiguas que nos ayuden a establecer los fundamentos de su visualidad y de sus rasgos más significativos desde sus remotos orígenes, trazaremos una panorámica de su devenir iconográfico; dadas las limitaciones del presente trabajo, y la inabarcable amplitud de los ejemplos disponibles, nos centraremos en dos de los tipos icónicos más representativos en los que esta deidad hace acto de presencia: el Nacimiento de Venus y el Juicio de Paris. Para su análisis nos serviremos tanto de las fuentes escritas clásicas como, esencialmente, de referentes documentales visuales como son las obras de arte, adaptaciones cinematográficas, publicaciones… El objetivo fundamental es tratar de establecer, a través de estos itinerarios iconográficos, no solo la evolución formal de la representación de la diosa a lo largo de la historia artística, sino la consideración que de ella se tiene en los diferentes momentos, y la capacidad de su adaptación, como personificación o prototipo del Amor, la Belleza o la Sensualidad, en las distintas etapas en las que se ha manifestado interés hacia su figura.

This paper scrutinises the evolution through the history of Western art of one of the most popular deities in classical mythology: Aphrodite/Venus. Thus, on the basis of multiple old references, the principles of her representation and her most outstanding features will be stablished, outlining an in-depth look into her iconographic formulation. Due to the limitations of this essay and the vast range of available examples, it will focus on the two most meaningful iconographic motifs: the Birth of Venus and the Judgement of Paris. For this analysis both classic written and visual resources will be addressed, as they are the works of art, the film adaptations or the publications mentioned along the paper. The main purpose of this essay is to explore the iconographic progress of the goddess’ representation in order to portray its formal evolution along the history of art, also regarding the subjective perception it provoked in different historic periods and its adaptive capacity, both as a personification and prototype for Love, Beauty or Sensuality along the various periods in which her figure has awaken interest.
