Bajo el sol de Tenochtitlán: el linaje de los "Nogales", entre Nueva España y Extremadura (siglos XVI-XVIII)

Abstract

La conquista del Imperio Azteca, por parte del extremeño Cortés, para la monarquía hispana, fue uno de los hitos más importantes de nuestra Historia Moderna. Durante su etapa de gobierno, consolidó y extendió el modelo imperial hispánico en territorio americano, por primera vez en la historia. Pero no solo conquistó sino que también realizó las primeras expediciones geográficas y geológicas del territorio, se exploraron las costas y los ríos, se fundaron nuevos pueblos y se extendió la doctrina cristiana, para la conversión de los indios. En este marco de conquista y colonización del primer virreinato en América, el de la Nueva España, las “redes familiares” siempre jugaron un papel relevante. Cargos burocráticos, mercantiles o eclesiásticos impulsaron a familias extremeñas, más o menos preeminentes y aventureras, a buscar acomodo al otro lado del Océano y, en bastantes ocasiones, basaron su prosperidad en personajes influyentes, gracias a lazos de parentesco o amistades en las altas esferas del poder. El estudio que aquí presentamos encara como proyecto una de estas familias,que vivió dividida entre ambas orillas del Atlántico, y cuyos componentes reforzaron sus vínculos con matrimonios endogámicos, ocuparon importantes cargos, se enriquecieron y finalmente, se ennoblecieron gracias a las riquezas del Nuevo Mundo. En las comarcas extremeñas de La Serena y La Siberia, y con un status económico-social preponderante, se insertó la distinguida familia Nogales, que dispuso de un patrimonio de cierta relevancia en la región. Un linaje cuya trayectoria vital discurrió, paralela, entre Extremadura y Puebla (Nueva España), durante los siglos XVI al XVIII. Una nutrida estirpe, enrevesada, con repetición de nombres y apellidos, persistente en el tiempo, y con personajes destacados en su seno: un Virrey-Obispo de Nueva España, cuatro Caballeros de la Orden Militar de Alcántara y uno de la de Santiago, Regidores Perpetuos, Colegiales Mayores y una Ejecutoria de Hidalguía de sangre, son el resumen de esta ilustre familia extremeña.

The conquest of the Aztec Empire, achieved by Cortes from Extremadura, for the Spanish monarchy, was one of the most important achievements in our modern History. During his time of governance, he consolidated and expanded the Spanish Imperial model in the Americas, for the first time in history. However not only did he conquer these lands, he also led the first geographical and geological expeditions in the territory. He explored the coastlines and the rivers, as well as establishing new towns and villages where he also spread the Christian doctrine, to convert the local Indian people. At this moment during the conquest and colonization of the first viceroyalty in America, New Spain, “family networks” always played a significant role. Positions of power in bureaucracy, mercantile and in the ecclesiastical sector led many influential and adventurous families from Extremadura, to find their home on the other side of the ocean. On many occasions these families based their prosperity on influential figures, thanks to familial ties and established friendships with those in high positions of power. The case study presented here is based around one of these families who lived on both sides of the Atlantic and whose members reinforced their positions and ties through incestuous marriages, occupying positions of power, enriching themselves in order to eventually become nobility thanks to the riches obtained in the New World. Due to a preponderant socio-economic position, in the counties of La Serena and La Siberia within Extremadura, the distinguished Nogales family established themselves because they disposed of a significant patrimony in the region. The Families lineage and trajectory spread, in parallel, between Extremadura and Puebla (New Spain) from the XVI century to the XVIII century. This rich and complicated family with repeated names, persistence through time and with many illustrious members in their ancestral line such as: a Viceroy-Bishop, four Knights of the Military Order of Alcántara and one from the Order of Santiago, Perpetual Aldermen, Noted Scholars and an executive order of nobility, are the definition of this illustrious family from Extremadura.
