Children with the attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) usually present associated problems, among which learning problems (LP) stand out, due to their high prevalence and their repercussions in the evolution of the disorder. The neuropsychological and performance profile that characterizes the group of children with ADHD+LP, compared to that of the group with ADHD alone, has been analyzed in numerous studies. However, until now no study has compared the motivational style of these two groups. Thus, the purpose of this study was to examine whether students with ADHD+LP (N= 27) differ from students who only have ADHD (N=21) in their motivational orientation, and contrast the children’s perceptions with those of their parents and teachers. Establishing goals, perseverance, selfawareness for learning, attributional style and self-concept were measured. The results showed that there were no significant differences between the group of children with ADHD+LP and the ADHD group without LP on any of the variables evaluated. However, both the parents and the teachers perceived more negative motivational characteristics in the children with ADHD+LP. The implications of these results are discussed, and educational strategies to foment intrinsic motivation are suggested. |
