El donativo de 1798

Abstract

La urgente necesidad de la Corona para la continuación de las guerras obligaría a adoptar. una vez más, un recurso del que se había abusado considerablemente a lo largo de la historia de España, el donativo voluntario. Es un recurso extraordinario al cual se acudió para hacer frente al fuerte incremento de los gastos y frenar el déficit de la Hacienda: una fórmula que, debido a la escasa cuantía de las aportaciones, sólo fue útil "para resolver situaciones de urgencia y de poco volumen". Las páginas que siguen pretenden arrojar alguna luz sobre qué respuesta dieron a esta solicitud del año 1798 los extremeños.

The urgent need of the Crown for the continuation of wars would force to take, once again, a resort that had been substantially misapplied along the history of Spain, the voluntary contribution. This is an extraordinary mean to which it was turned to deal with the high expense increase and diminish the Treasury deficit: a formula that, due to the tight amount of contributions, was merely useful "to solve emergency and tiny situations".
