Emotional intelligence is present in a large number of investigations that have been on the rise in the last decade, being the subject of study in different fields and with different objectives (Mayer et al. 2000; Schutte, 1998; Fernández-Berrocal et al. 2005 ; Extremera et al. 2003; Bar-On, R., 2000). Our work tries to establish the relationships between this same construct and variables such as empathy and personality, taking in turn optimism, the latter understood as attention selective towards the positive aspects of reality and that can help prevent major emotional problems (Seligman et. al, 2000). The study was carried out on a total sample of 443 participants, of which 20% were university students and the remaining 80% postgraduates. The instruments used have been the Spanish adaptation of the TMMS-24 by Fernández-Berrocal, Extremera and Ramos (2004) to assess perceived emotional intelligence; the personality inventory NEO-PI-R by Costa and McCrae (1992); the TECA cognitive and affective empathy test by López-Pérez, Fernández-Pinto and Abad (2008), and the Spanish adaptation of the LOT-R optimism test (Otero et al., 1998). The results of the statistical analysis show significant correlations between many factors of the variables analyzed; as well as an interesting contribution in the hierarchical regression of the optimism variable with the rest of those analyzed. |
