Las imágenes de la memoria en los poetas hispánicos de los siglos de oro. Fuentes e irradiaciones en otros periodos y literaturas

Abstract

La finalidad de este trabajo consiste en esbozar una tipología de las imágenes de la memoria empleadas por los poetas hispánicos de los Siglos de Oro, y en comprobar su operatividad en la poesía española de otras épocas y otras lenguas. Con este estudio aspiramos a solventar, en cierto modo, la escasez de trabajos de conjunto dedicados a una metáfora tan frecuente como la de la memoria. Para adoptar una definición de metáfora que facilite nuestro análisis establecemos un epígrafe teórico sobre la metáfora y la memoria, una revisión de los principales problemas conceptuales, de las figuras afines a la metáfora y de las grandes teorías. A la introducción teórica le siguen la exégesis de las imágenes de la memoria de los Siglos de Oro y el esbozo de una tipología en función de criterios psicológicos y temáticos: la memoria es percibida como algo positivo (remedio, medicina), negativo (tortura, desvarío) o dual; asimismo, la memoria puede servirse de metáforas espaciales (almacén, tesauro, región) y humanizadoras (la memoria siente y actúa como torturador, verdugo o protector). A estas imágenes se suman otras que agrupamos en torno a los sentidos y la teoría neoplatónica, y a las fórmulas de la fijación y la “renovación” del recuerdo. El catálogo propuesto para la poesía áurea es utilizado como base para el rastreo de imágenes en otros periodos y literaturas, en el cual computamos tanto la pervivencia de muchas de estas como su actualización.

The purpose of this paper is to outline a typology of images of memory used by the Hispanic poets from the Golden Age, and to verify its operability in the Spanish poetry of other times and other languages. With this study we aspire to resolve, in a certain way, the paucity of general works focused on a metaphor as frequent as that of memory. To take a definition of metaphor that eases our analysis we establish a theorical epigraph on metaphor and memory, a revision of the main conceptual problems, of the figures related to the metaphor and of the great theories. The theorical introduction is followed by the exegesis of the images of memory of the Golden Age and the outline of a typology based on psychological and thematical criteria: memory is seen as something positive (cure, medicine), negative (torture, derangement), or dual; likewise, memory can make use of spatial metaphors (storage, thesaurus, area) and humanizing (memory feels and acts as a torturer, executioner, or protector). To these images are added others that we group around the senses and Neoplatonic theory, and the formulas of the memory fixation and “renewal”. The proposed catalog for golden poetry is used as a basis for the image searching in other periods and literatures, in which we computed both the continuity of many of these and its update.
