La argumentación en las arengas militares de Tucídides

Abstract

El objetivo del presente trabajo es analizar la argumentación de las arengas militares de Tucídides, en las que hay dos líneas argumentativas. Una de tipo explicativo (διδαχή), acorde con la función que estos discursos desempeñan en el conjunto de la obra, y en la que se observa la influencia de la oratoria deliberativa. Otra de tipo exhortativo (παρακέλευσις), que emplea motivos parenéticos ya presentes en la épica, que fueron ampliamente reutilizados por la oratoria fúnebre. La combinación de ambas líneas generó un nuevo tipo de discurso historiográfico caracterizado por su flexibilidad y capacidad de adaptación al contexto narrativo.

The purpose of the present paper is to analyze the argument in the Thucydidean battle exhortations, in which there are two lines of argument. One explanatory type (διδαχή), is in agreement with the functions that these speeches carry out in the work, and here the influence of deliberative oratory is observed. Another type of exhortation is παρακέλευσις, which employs paraenetic topics, already used in the epic and also widely reused in funeral speeches. The combination of both lines of argument generated a new type of historiographic speech characterized by its flexibility and its capacity for adaptation to the narrative context.
