| es_ES |
dc.description.abstract | Syndrome X Fragile is second only to Down syndrome, as the hereditary illness that constitutes the most frequent cause of intellectual disability, and it is the primary cause of hereditary intellectual disability. In Spain, many studies have been carried out into the prevalence of people affected by this syndrome (Artigas and colleagues, 2001; Mila and colleagues, 1997...). However, in the Autonomous Community of Castile and Leon there are as yet no extensive studies available and we consider that 80% of those subjects affected still remain undiagnosed. This is an especially worrying fact that constitutes a problem. We consider that there is a priority need for accurate diagnose in our area for at least two reasons: firstly, genetic diagnosis greatly assists relevant and very necessary educational programs for those affected. Secondly, following diagnosis, appropriate preventive mechanisms can be put in place to combat the syndrome that offer suitable genetic counselling to families carrying the mutated gene. This is the only way to break the chain of transmission established by such disorders. The main aim of our study is to facilitate accurate diagnosis of the maximum number of male subjects affected by this syndrome in the province of Burgos and to offer genetic testing and counselling to their families. In order to do this, we have selected 276 intellectually disabled males over the age of 16, residing in or attending all of the public and private centers in the province of Burgos whom we consider to be at greatest risk because they registered the highest scores on the Hagerman Checklist. We describe, then cross, the methodology used with their 4 phases and the results of the study. | es_ES |
