Nearly twenty years ago, I put forward a hypothesis on the existence of moral censorship in the only manuscript of Quevedo’s Imitaciones de Marcial (MS 108 at the Biblioteca Menéndez Pelayo in Santander) that was known at the time. According to this hypothesis, Quevedo may have used several obscene words that were perhaps altered or replaced by various euphemisms in the said manuscript. The analysis of a second codex, conserved in the Biblioteca March in Palma de Mallorca, confirms that this censorship has taken place. This is proven by the fact that the presumed euphemisms in the Santander manuscript correspond systematically in the manuscript in the March Library to some of the following censorship procedures: the “alteration of syllables and/or letters” of the obscene term; the use of “suspension points”; the “elimination” of certain verses; the “omission” of the whole poem; or the insertion of “blank spaces.” |
