School and life for teenagers. Expectations and hopes in Italy and Brazil

Abstract

Este artículo presenta los primeros resultados de una investigación comparativa sobre la interacción de los adolescentes con la escuela en Italia y Brasil, y la formación de su identidad como estudiantes. Se analizaron tres grupos focales con estudiantes de 3 escuelas secundarias de la provincia de Roma a través de técnicas cualicuantitativas de análisis textual. Los resultados, en comparación con el estudio paralelo brasileño, muestran diferencias notables entre Italia y Brasil en cuanto a las expectativas de los estudiantes sobre la escuela, pero también algunas similitudes en su experiencia escolar y para el papel de la escuela en su vida. Los estudiantes italianos difieren de los brasileños ya que los primeros no atribuyen un alto valor a la escuela como medio de movilidad social. La mayoría de los estudiantes italianos muestran niveles muy altos de pesimismo sobre la posibilidad de encontrar un lugar mejor en la sociedad gracias a la educación. Muchos de ellos expresan un fuerte sentimiento de decadencia sobre la realidad social, económica y cultural italiana. Por el contrario, los estudiantes brasileños, a pesar de los dramáticos niveles de hambre, pobreza y violencia que viven, muestran una fuerte conciencia sobre la trayectoria ascendente de su país, y un alto nivel de confianza en su futuro y en el papel de la escuela en su proyecto de vida.

The paper presents the first results of a comparative research on the interaction of teenagers with school in Italy and Brazil, and the formation of their identity as students. Three focus groups with students of 3 high schools in the province of Rome were analyzed through quali-quantitative techniques of textual analysis. Results, compared to the parallel Brazilian study, show striking differences between Italy and Brazil as to the students’ expectations about school, but also some similarities in their school experience and for the role of school in their life. Italian students differ from Brazilian ones since the former do not attribute a high value to school as a means for social mobility. The majority of Italian students show impressive levels of pessimism about the possibility of finding a better place in society thanks to education. Many of them express a strong feeling of decline about the Italian social economic and cultural reality. On the contrary the Brazilian students, notwithstanding the dramatic levels of hunger, poverty and violence they live in, show a strong awareness about the ascending trajectory of their country, and a high level of trust in their future and in the role of school in their life project.
