The methanol molecule and its hydrogen-bridged self-associating species are studied using the SCF-LCAO-MO (Linear Combination of Atomic Orbitals - Self Consistent Field - Molecular Orbitals) method in its semi-empirical and ab initio versions in order to analyse the self-association process and to justify the nature and size of the most stable species present. On this basis, an attempt is made to explain the infrared profile in the 3000-4000 cm1 region for these systems in the context of the band overlap hypothesis and using a simplified vibrational treatment for vibrations with mechanical and electrical anharmonicity. |
