The influence that television can have on children and young people must be understood as mediated by the cultural contexts that surround them. Thus, viewing depends not only on factors inherent to the individual or to television content, but also on the type of influence exerted by other factors, among which parental mediation stands out. It is in this perspective of the dialectical relationship between individual-television-family context that this work is framed. The objective of this study is to analyze some aspects related to the family scenario as a context of use of the television medium and parental mediation from the perception of 127 adolescents and young people through a questionnaire called Questionnaire of Television Habits (QTH) whose purpose is to collect data referring to television preferences or diets, and aspects related to the uses of the television medium. The results show that the predominant type of family mediation in our sample is co-viewing, followed by instructive or guiding mediation and, finally, restrictive mediation. The implications of these data and possible future lines of research are discussed. |
