Las pinzas quirúrgicas del instrumental médico de Avgvsta Emerita

Abstract

En la colección de instrumentos médicos y farmacéuticos del Museo Nacional de Arte Romano de Mérida hay cinco pinzas, de las que cuatro pueden ser catalogadas sin lugar a dudas como quirúrgicas. Existe otro ejemplar del que se tienen dudas sobre su finalidad quirúrgica o cosmética (pinza de depilación). Una sexta pinza, pertenece a una colección privada. Estas piezas constituyen el grupo más valioso, por su número y sus características, de toda Hispania, donde se han encontrado un total de 44 pinzas, aunque de algunas de ellas se duda de su función quirúrgica. Las pinzas quirúrgicas emeritenses son de dos tipos: cuatro son de disección, tres de ellas con dientes (sólo hay otro ejemplar en Hispania con dientes, en Soria) y una sin dientes. Hay otra pinza articulada, de la que en Hispania sólo existe otro ejemplar en Numancia. Mediante el estudio de las piezas y tras examen de la bibliografía existente, se han podido determinar las aplicaciones quirúrgicas de estos instrumentos y las patologías en las que se empleaban.

In the collection of medical and pharmaceutical instruments of the National Museum of Roman Art in Mérida there are five tweezers, of which four can be classified without a doubt as surgical. There is another specimen of which there are doubts about its surgical or cosmetic purpose (hair removal tweezers). A sixth clamp belongs to a private collection. These pieces constitute the most valuable group, due to their number and characteristics, in all of Hispania, where a total of 44 forceps have been found, although some of them have doubts about their surgical function. The Emeritus surgical forceps are of two types: four are for dissection, three of them with teeth (there is only one other example in Hispania with teeth, in Soria) and one without teeth. There is another articulated clamp, of which in Hispania there is only one other example in Numancia. By studying the pieces and after examining the existing literature, it has been possible to determine the surgical applications of these instruments and the pathologies in which they were used.
