Conocimientos de Medicina Popular en ancianos de Guadiana del Caudillo (Badajoz)

Abstract

Los ancianos de la muestra estudiada tienen conocimientos destacables sobre Medicina Popular tanto cualitativa como cuantitativamente. La asociación de un mismo nombre vulgar a varias especies y viceversa, puede acarrear serios problemas sanitarios y creencias erróneas sobre la eficacia de un remedio. Identificar o recuperar el nombre popular de un remedio y su aplicación no es lo mismo que identificar o recuperar el propio remedio. Dada la dificultad de acceso a identificaciones de visu sería muy conveniente adaptar los actuales protocolos. Se podrían introducir aspectos botánicos, que de forma sistemática conduzcan a la determinación de la especie, mediante el contraste entre la información aportada por el encuestado y la bibliografía. Por ello se propone acotar y simplificar el cuestionario actual a favor de planteamientos botánicos y trabajar con un nuevo paradigma en los estudios de Medicina Popular. La aparición de una serie de fitónimos no catalogados refuerza la importancia de los estudios de Medicina Popular como un medio de recuperación de patrimonio.

The elderly in the sample studied have notable knowledge about Popular Medicine both qualitatively and quantitatively. The association of the same common name with several species and vice versa can lead to serious health problems and erroneous beliefs about the effectiveness of a remedy. Identifying or retrieving the popular name of a remedy and its application is not the same as identifying or retrieving the remedy itself. Given the difficulty of access to visu identifications, it would be very convenient to adapt the current protocols. Botanical aspects could be introduced, which systematically lead to the determination of the species, through the contrast between the information provided by the respondent and the bibliography. For this reason, it is proposed to limit and simplify the current questionnaire in favor of botanical approaches and work with a new paradigm in Popular Medicine studies. The appearance of a series of uncatalogued phytonyms reinforces the importance of Popular Medicine studies as a means of heritage recovery.
