Aldeanueva y Don Benito: Una historia paralela (S. XIII-XIV)

Abstract

Aldeanueva y Don Benito son dos aldeas de la Tierra de Medellín, que aparecen y se consolidan a lo largo de los siglos XIII y XIV (la primera data de finales del siglo XIII y la segunda de bien entrado el siglo XIV). Tanto en un caso como en otro, nos movemos con bastante incertidumbre dada la carencia de documentación sobre sus pasos iniciales. Cosa, por lo demás, bastante frecuente en los estudios de historia local medievales. Pero esta dificultad no nos impide acercarnos de manera indirecta a la protohistoria de ambas poblaciones. Nuestra hipótesis de partida es que la cesión de Aldeanueva de Medellín (actual Villanueva de la Serena) a la Orden de Alcántara (en 1303), es la causa más probable de la conversión de las alquerías existentes en los alrededores del cerro de los mártires, en la aldea de Don Benito.

Aldeanueva and Don Benito are two villages in the Land of Medellín, which appeared and consolidated throughout the 13th and 14th centuries (the first dates from the end of the 13th century and the second well into the 14th century). Both in one case and in another, we move with considerable uncertainty given the lack of documentation on its initial steps. Thing, moreover, quite frequent in the studies of medieval local history. But this difficulty does not prevent us from indirectly approaching the protohistory of both populations. Our starting hypothesis is that the cession of Aldeanueva de Medellín (now Villanueva de la Serena) to the Order of Alcántara (in 1303), is the most probable cause of the conversion of the existing farmhouses in the surroundings of the hill of the martyrs, in the village of Don Benito.
