The territory of Valle del Jerte-La Vera and its tourist development (Extremadura, SW Spain)

Abstract

A finales del siglo XX, el turismo se posicionó como una actividad capaz de diversificar y reactivar las economías de las zonas rurales europeas, que experimentaban problemas de regresión demográfica y un elevado índice de envejecimiento. Posteriormente, con la aparición y promoción de nuevos modelos de consumo turístico, se ha incrementado la oferta de equipamientos de turismo rural, como es el caso del norte de Extremadura. Este estudio analiza, mediante la utilización de un método descriptivo y analítico, la distribución de las variables demográficas, socioeconómicas y patrimoniales existentes en el territorio turístico de la comarca Valle del Jerte-La Vera con el fin de interrelacionarlas con la oferta y demanda turística de esta zona. Los resultados permiten observar que el Valle del Jerte-La Vera está potenciando las actividades turísticas, con la promoción e implantación de mejores líneas de actuación para la recepción de viajeros, de tal forma que favorecen el incremento de los ingresos económicos, y estos factores son capaces de mantener la población existente, facilitando así el desarrollo de las zonas rurales.

At the end of the 20th century, tourism was positioned as an activity capable of diversifying and reactivating the economies of rural European areas, which were experiencing problems of demographic regression and a high rate of ageing. Subsequently, with the emergence and promotion of new models of tourism consumption, the provision of rural tourism facilities has increased, as the case in the north of Extremadura. This study analyzes, through the use of a descriptive and analytical method, the distribution of the demographic, socioeconomic and heritage variables existing in the tourist territory of the Valle del Jerte-La Vera region in order to interrelate them with the tourist supply and demand in this area. The results allow us to observe that Valle del Jerte-La Vera is promoting tourist activities, with the promotion and implementation of better lines of action for the reception of travelers, in such a way that they favor the increase in the economic income, and these factors are capable to maintain the existing population, thus facilitating the development of rural areas.
