How has the COVID-19 pandemic affected the different branches of the agri-food industry in Extremadura (Spain)?

Abstract

La pandemia de COVID-19 ha tenido un impacto significativo en la economía mundial desde 2020. Este estudio analizó el impacto de la pandemia en empresas agroalimentarias innovadoras de diferentes ramas de la actividad agroindustrial ubicadas en Extremadura (España). El objetivo principal de este estudio fue determinar qué actividades se han visto más afectadas. También se evaluaron las diferencias entre las acciones y los cambios realizados en función de la naturaleza del producto, proceso o servicio. La información se obtuvo a partir de un cuestionario en línea en el que se plantearon las preguntas de investigación (¿qué consecuencias, acciones o cambios ha tenido la pandemia en el desarrollo de las actividades de las empresas?). Los datos se analizaron descriptivamente y se realizó un estudio estadístico sobre la existencia o ausencia de independencia entre efectos y acciones en función de las ramas de actividad de las industrias agroalimentarias. Los principales resultados mostraron que el funcionamiento financiero (disminución de la facturación y reducción/desplazamiento de la demanda de productos) y operativo de las empresas (dificultad en las actividades de marketing y paralización/declive en el ejercicio) se ha visto afectado principalmente. En respuesta, las agroindustrias innovadoras han actuado en sus procesos (mayor uso de las TIC y nuevas estrategias de comercialización) y procedimientos (implementación de protocolos higiénico-sanitarios más estrictos y reorganización de actividades y personal) para hacer frente a los efectos negativos en sus actividades. En general, todas las ramas agroindustriales han incorporado cambios en sus productos y servicios, principalmente al brindar nuevos y mejores beneficios a los clientes, y mejorar los formatos de los productos y las formas de pago a los proveedores. Estos hallazgos aportan información para la administración pública regional en el desarrollo de iniciativas que mitiguen los efectos negativos de la pandemia y favorezcan la implementación de acciones que ayuden a la adaptación de las actividades agroindustriales. Las políticas agrícolas deben incorporar medidas especializadas para garantizar la sostenibilidad global del sistema alimentario y agrícola y de la oferta y la producción.

The COVID-19 pandemic has had a significant impact on the world economy since 2020. This study analyzed the impact of the pandemic on innovative agri-food companies from different branches of agro-industrial activity located in Extremadura (Spain). The main aim of this study was to determine which activities have been most affected. Differences between actions and changes made depending on the nature of the product, process, or services were also evaluated. The information was obtained from an online questionnaire in which the research questions were posed (what consequences, actions, or changes has the pandemic had on the development of firms’ activities?). Data were analyzed descriptively, and a statistical study was conducted on the existence or absence of independence between effects and actions based on the branches of activity of agri-food industries. The main results showed that companies’ financial (decrease in turnover and reduction/displacement of product demand) and operational functioning (difficulty in marketing activities and standstill/decline in the fiscal year) has mainly been affected. In response, innovative agroindustries have acted regarding their processes (increased ICT use and new marketing strategies) and procedures (implementation of stricter hygienic-sanitary protocols and reorganization of activities and personnel) to deal with the negative effects on their activities. In general, all agro-industrial branches have incorporated changes in their products and services, mainly by providing new and better customer benefits, and improving product formats and forms of payment to suppliers. These findings provide information for the regional public administration in the development of initiatives that mitigate the negative effects of the pandemic and favor the implementation of actions that help the adaptation of agro-industrial activities. Agricultural policies should incorporate specialized measures to ensure the global sustainability of the food and agriculture system and the supply and production.
