Primitive Individualism. Family roots of early modern individualism in Spain

Abstract

El individualismo que emerge en la primera edad moderna es indispensable para comprender la evolución de la civilización occidental. La idea del crecimiento personal, la percepción de lo individual y la afirmación de cierta autonomía de pensamiento estuvieron fijadas en las familias antes de su formulación política. En este trabajo desarrollamos la idea de que el nacimiento del pensamiento libera contemporáneo se iza sobre un conjunto de ideas desarrolladas en el seno de las familias durante el siglo XVIII.

Ideas of personal growth, the perception of individual will and the affirmation of a certain autonorny of thought in the customs, are fixed in the comrnunities within the families, before being formulated politically. Families forged the necessary foundations ofliberal ideology which nlightenment and political thinkers developed in the late 18th century. This artide studies sorne of the family settings in which this trajectory is more visible in Spain.
