La historia del rugby en España, IIª parte. De 1924 hasta la II República

Abstract

A partir del establecimiento del rugby en Cataluña a principios de los años veinte del siglo pasado, este deporte también fue introducido en la “región de Centro”. Ello coincidió con el periodo de la dictadura del general Miguel Primo de Rivera (1924-1931), momento en el que surgieron los primeros conflictos federativos del rugby entre Barcelona y Madrid. En el fondo de la cuestión subyacían intereses personales, pero también condicionantes del ambiente político. El objetivo de este estudio se centra en conocer las claves y conflictos del desarrollo del rugby en el contexto de la dictadura primorriverista y, asimismo, en despertar un espacio crítico para interpretar y completar la historia del deporte en España. Ello es posible a través de una exploración de la prensa histórica deportiva y de noticias, pero también de la revisión de otros estudios pertinentes a la contextualización. Se concluye que el desarrollo del rugby estuvo mediado en un difícil contexto político centralizador y represivo, que conformó un ambiente hostil al nacionalismo deportivo catalán. Si bien, la hegemonía del rugby catalán no se ponía en duda, al llegar a los años treinta este deporte logró, además, un completo arraigo en el ambiente universitario de la capital española.

After the establishment of rugby in Catalonia in the early 1920s, the sport was also introduced in the “Central region”. This coincided with the period of the dictatorship of General Miguel Primo de Rivera (1924-1931), a time when the first rugby federation conflicts between Barcelona and Madrid arose. At the heart of the matter were personal interests, but also the conditioning factors of the political environment. The aim of this study is to understand the keys and conflicts in the development of rugby in the context of the Primo de Rivera dictatorship and, at the same time, to awaken a critical space to interpret and complete the history of sport in Spain. This is possible through an exploration of the historical sports and news press, but also through the review of other studies relevant to the contextualisation. It is concluded that the development of rugby was mediated in a difficult centralising and repressive political context, which shaped an environment hostile to Catalan sporting nationalism. Although the hegemony of Catalan rugby was not in doubt, by the 1930s the sport had also become firmly rooted in the university environment of the Spanish capital.
