The net nutritional status in Sierra Suroeste: a dehesas’ region full of contrasts

Abstract

Partiendo de la tesis de que la talla adulta es un buen indicador del estado nutricional neto, nuestra propuesta comunicativa explora las diferencias antropométricas existentes entre los jóvenes varones que fueron tallados y reclutados entre 1861 y 2000 en seis pueblos del suroeste de la provincia de Badajoz (España), zona históricamente dominada por el sistema de dehesa. Nacidos entre 1840 y 1979, estos reclutas mostraron colectivamente un crecimiento físico espectacular a lo largo de los siglos XIX y XX, especialmente desde la década de 1880, pero no todos crecieron longitudinalmente al mismo ritmo. Entre los casi 28.000 hombres jóvenes en edad de alistarse de quienes tenemos datos específicos de altura, encontramos diferencias antropométricas persistentes basadas en el lugar de residencia, el ingreso familiar, el nivel educativo, el estatus social, el estado de salud e incluso el grado de movilidad geográfica. Lo que pretendemos en la comunicación que proponemos es saber si estas disparidades son estadísticamente significativas y, en caso afirmativo, intentar explicar las razones de tales diferencias.

Based on the thesis that adult height is a good indicator of net nutritional status, our communication proposal explores the existing anthropometric differences between the young men who were carved and recruited between 1861 and 2000 in six towns in the southwest of the province of Badajoz (Spain), an area historically dominated by dehesa’s system. Born between 1840 and 1979, these recruits collectively showed spectacular physical growth throughout the 19th and 20th centuries, especially since the 1880s, but not all of them grew longitudinally at the same rate. Among the nearly 28,000 young men of enlistment age for whom we have specific height data, we find persistent anthropometric differences based on place of residence, family income, educational level, social status, state of health, and even the degree of geographical mobility. What we intend in the communication that we propose is to know if these disparities are statistically significant and, if so, to try to explain the reasons for such differences.
