La evolución histórica de la dehesa: entre la persistencia y el cambio

Abstract

La dehesa no ha sido siempre la reserva del toro de lidia, el reino del jamón ibérico o el feudo del corcho taponero, ni tampoco ha estado siempre vinculada a la desigualdad o a la despoblación. He aquí, si cabe, la principal aportación que puede hacer la Historia Económica al estudio de esta extraordinaria forma de explotación. Frente al presentismo que a veces invade la incursión de algunas disciplinas en la evolución histórica de la dehesa y frente al determinismo geográfico que subyace tras la valoración actual de la misma, el análisis de largo plazo que aquí se propone revela que la dehesa no es sólo una adaptación al medio, sino también la herencia de poderosas fuerzas de mercado e importantes cambios de carácter técnico e institucional. En este trabajo se conjugan todas estas variables, poniendo el acento en Extremadura, la región española que actualmente concentra la mayor proporción de superficie agraria útil dedicada a la dehesa.

The dehesa system has not always been the reserve of the fighting bull, the kingdom of the Iberian ham or the fiefdom of the cork cork, nor has it always been linked to social inequality or depopulation. Here, if possible, is the main contribution that Economic History can make to the study of this extraordinary form of exploitation. Faced with the presentism that sometimes invades the incursion of some disciplines into the historical evolution of the pasture and against the geographical determinism that underlies its current valuation, the long-term analysis proposed here reveals that the pasture is not only an adaptation to the environment, but also the inheritance of powerful market forces and important changes of a technical and institutional nature. In this work all these variables are combined, placing the emphasis on Extremadura, the Spanish region that currently concentrates the largest proportion of useful agrarian area dedicated to the dehesa system.
