Motivación estilística entre significante y significado en "The Single Hound" de Emily Dickinson

Abstract

Este artículo trata de analizar algunas características de la obra “The Single Hound” de Emily Dykinson (1914) a la luz de conceptos saussarianos de signos lingüísticos y sus dos componentes: significante y significado. Un breve análisis de dispositivos tales como la aliteración, rima, parataxis, hipotaxis, muestran que las formas externas (en palabras de Dámaso Alonso), están íntimamente ligadas a las internas, esto es, al significado. En consecuencia, estos estudios demuestran, una vez más, ahora en los poemas de Emily Dickinson, la afirmación de Dámaso Alonso de que en poesía, las relaciones entre significante y significado no son tan arbitrarias como reclamaba Seassure, al contrario, los lazos entre ellas son esenciales y están sumamente motivados.

The paper aims to analyse some stylistic features in Emily Dickinson's work The Single Hound (1914) in the light of the Saussurean concept of linguistic signs and its two components: signifying and signified. Brief analyses of such rhetorical devices as alliteration, rhyme, parataxis, hypotaxis, etc. shows that the «external form» (in Dámaso Alonso's words) is closely linked to the «internal one», that is, to the meaning. Thus, these analyses demonstrate, once again, now in Emily Dickinson's poems, what Dámaso Alonso said: that, in poetry, the relationship between signifying and signified is not arbitrary at all as Saussure claimed; on the contrary, the link between them is essential and highly motivated.
